Moon Palace Cancun: Our Multigenerational Family Holiday in Mexico

February saw us swap the UK winter for warm Mexican sunshine as we headed to Moon Palace Cancun for a big multigenerational family holiday. Travelling with our children, then aged 20 and 17, our 17 year old’s girlfriend and the grandparents, it turned into one of those family trips that everyone still talks about.

For a holiday with different generations, finding somewhere that works for everyone can be a challenge. Moon Palace Cancun made it surprisingly easy. We stayed on an all inclusive basis, giving everyone the freedom to enjoy the holiday without constantly thinking about the cost of every meal, drink or activity.

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Moon Palace was the choice. There was something for every age, whether you wanted to spend the day around the pool, enjoy the beach, take part in activities or simply find somewhere quiet for a drink and a chat. For a multigenerational holiday, that flexibility is invaluable. The teenagers and young adults could do their own thing, the grandparents could relax, and we could all come together for meals and experiences. The all inclusive experience also made everything feel much more relaxed. Nobody was worrying about who was paying for what every time someone wanted a snack, drink or ice cream.

Isla Mujeres: Worth Every Bump on the Waves

One of the absolute highlights of our Mexico holiday was a day trip to Isla Mujeres.

Getting there was an adventure in itself. The boat was travelling quickly and the waves were pretty hard hitting, which was particularly challenging for me as I suffer from motion sickness. Let’s just say it was not my favourite part of the day! But the moment we arrived, I knew it had been worth it. The water surrounding Isla Mujeres is an incredible shade of turquoise and unbelievably clear. We went snorkelling and saw brightly coloured fish swimming through the reefs, and suddenly the slightly uncomfortable boat journey was forgotten. The island has a wonderfully laid back Caribbean feel, with white sandy beaches, beach clubs, colourful streets and little souvenir shops. It felt friendly and relaxed, while still giving us plenty to explore.

For me, Isla Mujeres was one of those moments when you think, this is exactly why we came to Mexico.

Cancun Beaches, Dolphin Beach and Water Sports

Back in Cancun, we also made time to enjoy some of the beautiful beaches. Dolphin Beach was a particular favourite. The coastline here is spectacular, with soft white sand, beautiful blue water and that huge Caribbean horizon stretching out in front of you. For the older teenagers and young adults, we added a little more adventure with a jet ski experience through the mangroves. It was such a fun way to see another side of Cancun and the surrounding coastline.

Speeding across the water with the lush greenery around us was an experience everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Xcaret Park: Nature, Culture and Adventure

Another unforgettable day was our visit to Xcaret Park, one of the most popular attractions in Riviera Maya.

There is an incredible amount to see and do at Xcaret. From underground rivers and jungle trails to wildlife, cultural performances and beautiful natural surroundings, it offers a completely different experience from a traditional beach day. We spent hours exploring, swimming and enjoying the scenery. I did manage to collect a few jungle bites along the way, which was definitely not the souvenir I had hoped for, but even that could not spoil the experience!

Xcaret is particularly good for families because everyone can choose what they want to do. You can be adventurous, learn about Mexican culture, explore nature or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Mextreme Cancun: Dinner With a Difference

One evening we headed to Mextreme, and it was such a fun family night out. This is definitely not a quiet dinner. The staff are incredibly interactive and playful, turning the meal into part restaurant and part entertainment. There was plenty of laughter around the table and it was one of those evenings where everyone, from the grandparents to the twenty somethings, was thoroughly entertained.

For a multigenerational family holiday, these are the experiences that make the trip memorable.

Moon Palace Cancun proved to be a fantastic base for our multigenerational Mexico holiday. The all inclusive format meant everyone could relax and enjoy themselves, while the wide choice of restaurants, pools, activities and entertainment meant nobody was bored. But what made the holiday particularly special were the experiences beyond the resort.

The turquoise waters of Isla Mujeres, snorkelling with tropical fish, the excitement of jet skiing through the mangroves, exploring Xcaret Park and enjoying lively evenings together gave us memories that went far beyond a typical beach holiday.

Absolutely.

Cancun and the wider Riviera Maya offer an excellent combination of beautiful beaches, luxury all inclusive resorts, family friendly activities, Mexican culture and exciting excursions.

For families travelling with older children, teenagers, young adults and grandparents, there is enough variety for everyone to enjoy the holiday in their own way while still having plenty of opportunities to spend quality time together. Mexico gave us the perfect balance of relaxation, adventure, sunshine and family time.

It is a destination I would happily return to and one I now recommend with real enthusiasm to families looking for a special multigenerational holiday in Mexico.
