Physical, active holidays for stress relief

Move Your Body, Soothe Your Mind: Active Holidays to Support Your Mental Health

Cara Lynch on 08 Jun 2026

When working in mental health, one of the first discussions I had with anyone who felt stressed was about how they could get out in the fresh air and get some exercise. Physical exercise releases endorphins which are natural painkillers and mood elevators. A holiday can be the perfect way to reset mental health habits. Instead of forcing yourself to squeeze the gym in around an already packed life, you can choose a break where gentle, enjoyable movement is built into each day. Here are a few ideas for active holidays that are kind to your body and calming for your mind.

Gentle Walking and Hiking Breaks: Moving Meditation in Nature

Walking is the perfect moving meditation. It’s rhythmic, simple and ideal for busy or anxious minds. Top on my own walking bucket list is the Camino de Santiago, a set of routes across Spain (and beyond) that all lead to the city of Santiago de Compostela. You can pick and choose how you walk the various routes, either trying out a 3-4 day “Camino taster”, or a longer, 10–12-night trek, spending longer in Santiago and a couple of nights at the coast either side of your walk.

Water & “Blue Mind” Escapes: Finding Calm by the Sea or Lakes

"Blue mind” describes a mildly meditative state of peace, calm, and happiness triggered by being in, on, or near water. That could include wild swimming breaks in safe, guided settings with cosy saunas or hot tubs or gentle days on the water: kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or slow boat trips.

At Koia All-Suite Wellbeing Resort on the Greek island of Kos, suites and shared spaces are designed to face the Aegean, so the first thing you see when you wake is open water and sky. Your day might start with a guided SUP session in one of the island’s sheltered bays. Later, spend the afternoon relaxing on the terrace, floating in the water or taking a coastal walk, letting the movement and the presence of the sea gently quieten your nervous system. It’s not about pushing for performance, but about noticing how different your mind feels when movement and blue spaces are part of the rhythm of your day.

Easy Cycling & Soft Adventure: Rediscovering Joy and Freedom

In February 2026, I spent time in Mallorca, a real hotspot for cyclists. In Port de Sóller, Bikes and Bakes (Reynes Cycling Café) was a magnet for cyclists pausing for strong coffee and fresh pastries before heading back out on the road. When I design cycling holidays, I focus on making them playful and flexible rather than athletic and exhausting. That might mean leisurely countryside or riverside rides on an e‑bike, or “base‑and‑ride” trips where you stay in one comfortable hotel and explore a different route each day. The steady, gentle cardio workout of cycling can boost energy and endorphins, helping you return home feeling lighter in body and clearer in mind.

If you are feeling tired, stuck or just ready for a reset, an active yet gentle holiday could be the kindest gift you give yourself. You don’t need to be ‘sporty’ or have it all together for this to help. Together, we can shape a break that matches your energy, your comfort zone and your hopes for how you would like to feel when you come home. If this speaks to you, get in touch and let us start designing a trip that supports your mind as much as it inspires your body.
