Heatwaves, holidays and how to travel more responsibly
As the current heatwave continues, it is a powerful reminder of global warming and our shared responsibility to “do our bit” for the planet. At the same time, we are living in an era when exploring the world has never been more accessible. So how do we balance our love of travel with a desire to tread more lightly?
Here are some practical ways I help clients build more responsible holidays, without losing any of the magic.
- Rethink distance: embrace the staycation
Staying closer to home instantly reduces travel miles, and with the current warm weather there is even more reason to enjoy what is on our doorstep. From coastal retreats to countryside boltholes, a carefully planned staycation can feel every bit as special as an overseas escape, with a far smaller carbon footprint.
- Choose the train where possible
Rail journeys can take you surprisingly long distances with a lower environmental impact than flying. They also remove the stress of airline luggage restrictions and airport queues. For many clients, the journey itself becomes part of the experience: scenic routes, city-to-city convenience and a more relaxed pace. - Travel in the shoulder seasons
Avoiding the peak holiday weeks can ease pressure on local infrastructure, from water and energy supplies to public transport and attractions. Shoulder-season travel often means fewer crowds, better value and a more authentic connection with the destination, while spreading tourism more evenly through the year. - Support community-based tourism
Choosing experiences that are rooted in local communities is one of the most positive decisions we can make as travellers. Whether it is staying in locally owned accommodation, booking a neighbourhood food tour or visiting social enterprises, your holiday spend can directly support local jobs, skills and cultural preservation.
- Engage with wildlife responsibly
Wildlife encounters are often a highlight of any trip, but it is vital they are ethical. This means choosing reputable, animal-friendly providers, avoiding captive or exploitative experiences, and always putting animal welfare ahead of the photo opportunity. A responsible wildlife experience should support conservation, not compromise it.
Thoughtful choices add up. With the right planning, it is absolutely possible to keep discovering the world while travelling more responsibly.
