Aegean Secrets & Turkish Sunsets: My Athens, Chios & Çesme Escape

Caroline Hoblyn on 03 Sept 2026

I have just come back from one of those quietly special trips that stays with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase. I have been inspired to create a trip that I cannot wait to share: two nights in historic Athens, four nights unwinding on soulful Chios, then a hop across the water to the Turkish coast for four nights in charming Çesme, flying home from Izmir. Think ancient sites, secret‑feeling villages like patterned Pyrgi, a 25‑minute ferry ride across the Aegean, fresh Greek and Turkish food, easy travel days and sunset moments that seem to pause time. It is the kind of itinerary that balances curiosity with calm, and I am excited to show you how it all fits together.

Have you ever been somewhere for a “one off” event and realised, almost instantly, that you’ve uncovered a destination you just have to share with everyone?

That was Chios for me.

I was invited as a guest to a wedding on this beautiful Greek island and, in between the music, laughter and late‑night toasts, I found myself quietly falling in love with somewhere that still feels like a whispered secret in the Aegean. As I relaxed after the celebrations, by the pool, an idea began to form:

What if I could turn this into a wonderfully balanced itinerary: Athens, Chios and a taste of Turkey, all in one easy trip?

The result is a 10‑night journey that weaves together history, island charm, delicious food, true downtime and those golden sunset moments that linger long after you’re home. Here is how I would shape it:

Days 1–3: Athens – Where Your Story Begins

Fly into Athens (3.30 mins from London) and give yourself two nights to settle into the rhythm of the city. This is not just a quick stopover: it is the opening chapter of your holiday and it deserves to be savoured. With two nights you can:

Walk through ancient history at the AcropolisArrive, drop your bags, and head straight for one of the world’s most iconic sites. Wander up to the Parthenon and take in those sweeping views over Athens. There is a real thrill in knowing that you are standing where philosophers, poets and leaders once stood.

Stroll the streets of Plaka & Anafiotika. At the foot of the Acropolis is Plaka, a pretty warren of narrow streets, neoclassical façades and leafy corners. Venture a little higher into Anafiotika and you suddenly feel as if you have been transported to a whitewashed island village, even though you are still in the heart of the capital.

Dine like a local. Evenings in Athens are made for long, lazy dinners. Think grilled fish, fresh salads, creamy dips and that unmistakable scent of oregano on the breeze. Choose a rooftop spot if you can and watch the Acropolis glow softly above the city as the sun goes down.

Balance culture with café time. On your full day, mix in a museum or two, perhaps the Acropolis Museum or the National Archaeological Museum, with café stops and people‑watching in Syntagma or Monastiraki. The trick is not to rush. Your holiday starts here, so let Athens ease you into the journey rather than race you through it.

After two nights, you leave with a sense of place and story, ready for your island escape!

Days 3–7: Chios – Island Secrets & Slow Moments

From Athens it is a short, 35‑minute flight across sparkling blue to Chios, and yet it feels like you have stepped into a different Greece entirely. There is something wonderfully unshowy about this island – it quietly gets under your skin. You settle in for four nights at the Royal Pearl Island Hotel, a relaxing base that gives you space to unwind after Athens. Think leisurely breakfasts, a more authentic pace of life and the feeling that you are not in a “packaged” resort, but somewhere exquisite and calm. While here you must visit Pyrgi!

Pyrgi: A Village Painted in Patterns. One of the absolute highlights on Chios is visiting Pyrgi. It is a medieval village unlike anywhere else I have been in Greece.

The houses are decorated with a unique black‑and‑white geometric pattern called xysta, painstakingly carved and painted onto the façades. As you wander the narrow lanes, you find yourself constantly looking up, spotting new motifs and shapes at every turn. It is like walking through an open‑air gallery, but one where people still live, chat in doorways and hang washing across the alleyways. In the central square you can sit with a coffee or a cool drink under the shade of trees, listening to the gentle hum of local life. It is the kind of place that makes you slow down without even realising, and it captures that side of Greece that feels both historic and deeply lived‑in.

From your base at the Royal Pearl Island Hotel you can:

Take a leisurely trip to Pyrgi and neighbouring villages, perhaps combining it with a stop at the island’s mastic‑growing areas. Explore pretty coastal spots and beaches where you can simply swim, read and recharge. Enjoy evenings of fresh seafood, simple grilled meats and local wine, often at family‑run tavernas where hospitality feels genuinely heartfelt.

Four nights gives you enough time to experience the island without ever feeling rushed, and to enjoy some precious downtime between exploring days.

Days 7–11: Across the Water to Turkey – Çesme & Surrounds

One of the joys of Chios is how close it brings you to the Turkish coast. From your hotel it is a very short taxi ride to Chios ferry port, where you board the ferry across the Aegean to Çesme. In around 25 minutes you are stepping off the boat into a new country, new flavours and a subtly different atmosphere, all without a long travel day. You stay four nights in Çesme, a laid‑back seaside town that blends pretty marina views with easy access to some delightful places nearby. This is where the trip takes on a new dimension.

From Çesme, you can: Wander the cobbled streets of AlaçatıJust a short drive away, Alaçatı is a gorgeous town of stone houses, colourful shutters and bougainvillea tumbling over archways. It is full of boutique shops, stylish cafés and wine bars, yet still retains a charm that feels very much its own. An afternoon here slips easily into an evening of meze, music and people‑watching.

Unwind on the beaches of the Çesme peninsulaThe coastline here is made for lazy days. You will find beaches and beach clubs where you can dip in and out of the turquoise sea, enjoy lunch right by the water and finish the day with that delicious haziness that only comes from sun, salt and sea air.

Taste your way through Turkish cuisine. This is a wonderful place to fall in love with Turkish food if you have not already. Think generous plates of meze, grilled kebabs, seafood, fragrant rice dishes and baklava for dessert. Pair it all with sunset views over the marina or out towards the islands and it becomes as much about the moment as the meal.

Optional day trips. For those who like to keep a touch of culture in the mix, it is possible to arrange day trips a little further afield, depending on your interests, balancing them with the restful rhythm of Çesme itself.

Four nights here rounds off the journey beautifully: enough time to feel that you have had a genuine taste of Turkey, without the need to pack and move every day. When it is time to head home, you travel to Izmir, from where you can fly directly back, closing the circle of your Greek–Turkish adventure in a simple, seamless way.

Why This Itinerary Works So Well: For me, this itinerary captures everything I look for in a truly memorable trip:

Historic sights: From the Acropolis in Athens to medieval Pyrgi and the layered history of the Aegean coast, you are never far from a story.

Amazing food: Greek and Turkish cuisines each bring their own magic to the table: fresh, generous and deeply rooted in place.

Rest and relaxation: Chios and Çesme both offer that much‑needed breathing space. This is not a frantic tick‑list holiday; it is a gentle unfolding.

Effortless flow: Short flights, an easy 25‑minute ferry crossing, and a direct flight home from Izmir mean the journey itself feels smooth, leaving you more energy to enjoy the places you are in.

It all began with a wedding in Chios, but what I brought home was the outline of a great trip, whether you lean more towards culture, coast, food or pure relaxation.

If this three‑centre Athens, Chios and Turkey escape has sparked ideas for your next adventure, I would love to shape it around you: your pace, your preferences and your perfect sunset moments. Contact me to start planning your own Aegean & Turkish coastal story.
