What's Your Safari Style?

Team Tent V's Luxury Lodge

Cath Reese on 11 Jul 2026

Are You Team Tent Or Team Luxury Lodge On Safari? When you picture your dream safari, what do you see first? The flicker of a campfire outside your canvas tent, or a private plunge pool overlooking a waterhole from your luxury suite? Both styles of safari can be utterly magical, but they offer very different experiences. If you are wondering which might be right for you (or perhaps you are travelling as a couple or group who cannot quite agree), this guide will help you decide whether you are Team Tent or Team Luxury Lodge.

The Magic Of A Tented Safari: For The Romantic Adventurer

A classic under–canvas safari is all about atmosphere.

Think:
• The sounds of the bush all around you at night
• Soft lantern light and crackling campfires
• Simple but stylish comforts, often with vintage–inspired décor

You are close to nature, yet still wonderfully cared for. Many tented camps today are more “glamping” than “roughing it”:
• Proper beds with soft linens
• En suite bathrooms (sometimes with outdoor showers)
• Thoughtful touches like hot water bottles on cooler nights and early–morning coffee brought to your tent

Why Team Tent might suit you:
• You love the idea of a traditional safari feel, with canvas walls and storytelling around the fire.
• You want that sense of adventure and connection to the wild, but still enjoy creature comforts.
• You are happy to unplug a little: some tented camps have limited Wi Fi and a more back to nature vibe.

The Appeal Of A Luxury Safari Lodge: For The Comfort–Seeker

Luxury lodges are ideal if you want to experience the drama of the bush, then retreat into five–star comfort at the end of the day.
Picture:
• Spacious suites or villas with air conditioning or fans
• Beautifully designed interiors, often with freestanding baths and indoor–outdoor showers
• Private decks, sometimes with your own plunge pool or hot tub
• Exceptional food and wine, often rivaling top city restaurants

You still enjoy the same incredible wildlife viewing, expert guiding and twice–daily game drives, but your “home” base feels like a boutique hotel in the heart of the wilderness.

Why Team Luxury Lodge might suit you:
• You love your creature comforts and want a truly indulgent stay.
• You are marking a special occasion like a honeymoon, big birthday or anniversary.
• You appreciate little luxuries: spa treatments, wine cellars, gourmet tasting menus and possibly even butler service.

What Both Styles Have In Common

Whichever you choose, a well–chosen safari camp or lodge will offer:
• Exceptional wildlife experiences: Morning and afternoon game drives with professional guides and trackers.
• Immersive bush moments: Sundowners in scenic spots, bush breakfasts, and time to simply sit and watch the wilderness.
• Warm hospitality: Friendly staff who quickly remember how you take your morning coffee and are genuinely passionate about their home.
• Starry skies: Whether you are outside your tent or on your private deck, African skies at night are unforgettable.

The main difference is not in the quality of the wildlife, but in how you like to eat, sleep and relax between game drives.

How To Choose: A Few Questions To Ask Yourself

To work out your “team”, consider:
1. How important is air conditioning or extra space? Essential for your comfort, especially in hotter months: you may lean towards a lodge. Nice but not vital: a tented camp could be perfect.
2. Are you celebrating something special? Honeymoons or big milestones often suit the extra privacy and indulgence of a luxury lodge. If you want a more authentic, romantic “Out of Africa” feel, a tented camp can be incredibly special too.
3. What is your travel style at home? Do you typically choose small boutique hotels and chic city stays? A luxury lodge will likely feel very “you”. Do you love cabins, cottages and character stays? A tented camp will probably steal your heart.
4. Are you travelling with children or multi generational family? Some lodges offer family suites, kids’ clubs or child–friendly activities, which can work brilliantly. Certain tented camps welcome families too, but others may be better suited to adults only.

Why Not Enjoy The Best Of Both?

One of my favourite ways to design a safari is to mix styles. For example:
• Nights under canvas first, to really feel the romance and adventure of the bush.
• Then finish with a few nights in a luxury lodge, where you can unwind in extra comfort, enjoy the spa and savour long, lazy lunches by the pool between game drives.

This balance gives you the full range of experiences in one trip and works beautifully for honeymoons, anniversaries or those once in a lifetime “big” safaris.

Tailoring The Right Safari For You

There is no right or wrong answer: it is simply about what will make you feel happiest, safest and most relaxed while still delivering those unforgettable wildlife moments.

As your personal Travel Counsellor, I can:
• Talk through your safari dreams and travel style.
• Recommend specific camps and lodges that match your preferences and budget.
• Advise on the best time of year and which areas to combine.
• Arrange private transfers, internal flights and any pre or post safari stays so everything flows smoothly.

Whether you are firmly Team Tent, devoted to Team Luxury Lodge, or tempted by a little of both, I will design a safari that feels entirely your own.
