Autumn might not steal the spotlight in the same way as summer, but it is often one of the most rewarding seasons to travel. Cooler days make time outdoors far more comfortable, landscapes glow with rich seasonal colours, and many places slip into a gentler rhythm once the peak holiday crowds have departed. That is where the idea of the “cool cation” comes in. Rather than chasing high temperatures, these trips celebrate crisp mountain air, lakeside strolls, dramatic scenery, comforting cuisine and the kind of weather that invites you to add an extra layer and keep exploring. From the Italian Alps to the Canadian Rockies, here are seven destinations that truly shine in autumn.
The Dolomites, Italy
Autumn gives the Dolomites a completely different feel. The peaks are still wonderfully dramatic, but the forests below shift into shades of gold and copper, and the cooler air makes it perfect for getting out on the trails without the summer heat or crowds.
It is such a lovely time to slow things down: think a morning walk along a mountain path, a leisurely lunch in a cosy rifugio, then heading back to a spa hotel as the temperature dips outside. With South Tyrol’s mix of Italian and Alpine culture, hearty local dishes, excellent wines and pretty towns like Ortisei and Cortina d’Ampezzo, it is a really special place to experience autumn.
Norway
Norway omes into its own in autumn, when the summer crowds have thinned and the landscapes feel wonderfully peaceful. Think fjords framed by burnished hillsides, quieter roads and viewpoints, and crisp, fresh air that is perfect for gentle hikes and scenic drives. It is the ideal time to wrap up, slow the pace, and simply enjoy Norway’s wild beauty, cosy cafes and welcoming small towns.
Slovenia
Slovenia feels like a bit of a hidden gem in autumn. The lakes and mountains take on softer colours, forests turn shades of amber and gold, and everything feels a little calmer once summer has passed. It is a wonderful time to wander around Lake Bled, explore quiet hiking trails, or linger over long lunches and cosy dinners, really soaking up the scenery without the crowds.
Switzerland
Autumn in Switzerland is all about contrast: golden valleys and glassy lakes
set against snow-dusted Alpine peaks. Think Lucerne, Interlaken and the
Jungfrau region for a mix of dramatic mountain scenery, serene lakeside time
and wonderfully scenic train journeys.
It is the perfect season to travel slowly, watching the
landscape unfold from the comfort of Switzerland’s iconic rail routes and
pausing in charming smaller towns along the way. Just note that some mountain
lifts and attractions do close between summer and winter, so a little forward
planning is essential.
September is a wonderful time to experience the Canadian Rockies, as Banff and
Jasper relax after summer and slip into rich autumn colours. Days feel fresher,
the light is softer, and for a short window the larch trees blaze vivid gold
against turquoise lakes and rugged peaks.
It is a lovely season for unhurried walks, gentle hikes and scenic drives, with elk, deer and the chance of bears still part of the magic. Just be mindful of local advice, give wildlife plenty of space and be prepared for changeable mountain weather.
Austria
Autumn in Austria has a wonderfully relaxed feel, with mountain scenery and seasonal colours adding warmth to every view. In the Tyrol and SalzburgerLand, forests glow in shades of red and gold, walking trails are still welcoming, and you can easily mix lakes, villages and cable cars without needing to commit to full–on hiking every day.
For a city contrast, Salzburg pairs beautifully with the nearby lakes and mountains, while Vienna comes into its own on cooler evenings, with cosy coffee houses, museums, historic streets and traditional wine taverns that invite you to linger.
Iceland
Autumn in Iceland really captured my heart. There was still plenty of daylight for chasing waterfalls, exploring volcanic landscapes, soaking in geothermal pools and walking along black-sand beaches, yet the darker evenings brought that wonderful sense of anticipation for the Northern Lights.
I based myself in ReykjavÃk and explored the Golden Circle and south coast, where places like Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara showed just how quickly the scenery shifts as you travel. The weather was wildly changeable, but that felt like part of the magic, especially when each day ended with a warm soak in a geothermal lagoon.
Whether you are drawn to lakes and mountains, dramatic coastlines or storybook towns, there is a cooler escape out there with your name on it.
