My First Royal Caribbean Cruise - Inside the New Legend of the Seas
A first-hand look at open-air living, daring water slides and show-stopping entertainment on Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon Class ship.
Stepping on board Royal Caribbean’s brand-new Legend of the Seas for its exclusive media preview sailing felt like walking into a floating resort city. Sailing from Málaga to Civitavecchia (for Rome), I had my first taste of Royal Caribbean life: from open, light-filled spaces and alfresco dining to record-breaking slides, surf simulators and the most breathtaking water acrobatic shows I have ever seen at sea. This is my first-hand account of what it was really like.
I am Claire, an independent Travel Counsellor with a particular love for cruise holidays. Experiencing Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas first-hand means I can share real, honest insight with you: from which neighbourhoods to explore and where to find the best outdoor spaces, to which shows and activities are truly unmissable. Whether you are a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor looking for something new, I will take the time to understand what you enjoy and design a cruise holiday that feels perfectly tailored to you. When you are ready to start planning your own adventure at sea, I would be delighted to help.
Stepping On Board Royal Caribbean’s Brand-New Legend of the Seas
At the end of June 2026, I had the privilege of joining Royal Caribbean’s exclusive media preview sailing of Legend of the Seas, the newest Icon Class megaship. Sailing from vibrant Málaga to Civitavecchia for Rome, this 250,800-ton giant is not just a ship: it feels like a floating resort, entertainment district and waterpark all rolled into one.
This was my very first time cruising with Royal Caribbean, and I could not have chosen a more spectacular introduction.
First Impressions
From the moment I stepped on board, what struck me most was the feeling of openness.
Indoors, the public spaces are vast yet cleverly designed so you never feel hemmed in. Wide walkways, soaring atriums and huge windows mean natural light is everywhere. As a first-time Royal Caribbean cruiser, I had expected “big and busy”. What I found instead was big, yet surprisingly calm and comfortable.
I loved wandering from bar to bar, discovering a new favourite corner every day. One moment I was sipping a drink in a buzzy, sociable lounge, the next I was in a quieter space, just watching the sea drift by. With so many bars and restaurants, you are spoilt for choice, and it is easy to find a spot that matches your mood.

Dining - From Open-Air Breakfasts to Alfresco Evenings
Dining on Legend of the Seas quickly became one of the highlights of my trip.
There is a huge variety of restaurants, 28 dining destinations to be exact! From casual grab-and-go bites to more refined venues, but what I enjoyed most was the outdoor dining. There is something incredibly special about eating in the open air, watching the wake stretch out behind the ship or the coastline slipping past in the golden evening light.
Breakfast outdoors, with a gentle sea breeze and the sun just climbing, set the tone for the day perfectly. Evenings became about long, lazy dinners outside: good food, a glass of wine in hand, and that endless sea view. It is the kind of simple luxury that makes cruise life so addictive.

The Largest Waterpark at Sea
Legend of the Seas is home to the largest waterpark at sea, and I was determined to experience it properly. I am not naturally a daredevil, but it turns out this ship brings out your brave side.
The FlowRider surf simulator was my first challenge. Watching from the sidelines, it looks easy enough; standing on the board with water roaring beneath you is another matter entirely. There were plenty of laughs, a few wobbles and some inevitable wipe-outs, but the buzz when you finally get your balance is fantastic.
Then came Frightening Bolt, the tallest slide at sea. Just climbing the tower builds the anticipation: incredible views, a tingle of nerves and that little voice in your head asking if you are really about to do this. The moment the floor drops away and you shoot down the slide is pure adrenaline. By the time I splashed out at the bottom I was breathless, slightly shaky and absolutely ready to go again.
For families, groups of friends, or just the young-at-heart, this waterpark is a genuine showstopper. It is exciting without feeling chaotic, and there are plenty of areas to lounge nearby if you prefer to be chief photographer rather than chief daredevil.
Outdoor Spaces
One of the things I appreciated most was how easy it is to connect with the ocean, despite the scale of the ship.
There are so many outdoor decks and quiet corners that you can always find somewhere to pause and just soak it all in. Whether it was an early-morning coffee with hardly anyone around, or a sunset stroll before dinner, those moments of calm framed the whole experience.
The pool areas are lively and fun, but step just a little further along the deck and you can usually find a quieter nook with a lounger, a view and the sound of the sea as your soundtrack.
Show Time - Falling in Love with the AquaDome
If I had to pick my absolute favourite part of the cruise, it would be the entertainment, and in particular the AquaDome.
The AquaDome show is a breathtaking blend of water, light, music and acrobatics. Watching world-class performers dive, twist and fly through the air in such an intimate yet dramatic setting is truly unforgettable. It feels immersive and theatrical, like a West End or Las Vegas production that just happens to be taking place in the middle of the Mediterranean.
As someone who loves live performance, I was blown away by the quality and creativity. The timing, the choreography, the way the water and lighting are used: it all comes together to create something genuinely magical. I left each show feeling uplifted, amazed and slightly in disbelief that this was all included on a cruise ship.

A New Favourite Way to Travel
As my first experience with Royal Caribbean, Legend of the Seas has set the bar incredibly high.
I loved:
The sense of space indoors and out
The variety of bars and restaurants to discover
The joy of open-air dining and relaxing outside
Pushing my boundaries at the biggest waterpark at sea, from FlowRider to Frightening Bolt
The sheer wow factor of the AquaDome and the water acrobatic shows
Legend of the Seas manages to feel both thrilling and relaxed, packed with things to do yet full of places to simply switch off and enjoy the journey. For me, it has confirmed that cruising is not just about where you go, but how you feel on the way there.
If you are curious about trying a new generation of cruise ship, especially if you love a mix of high-energy fun, great dining and standout entertainment, Legend of the Seas deserves a place at the top of your list.
