Why VIVA River Cruises Won Me Over – My Danube Journey from Nuremberg to Budapest

A Danube River cruise had been on my travel wish list for a while, so when the opportunity came to experience VIVA River Cruises on a six-night journey along the Danube, I couldn't wait to see what all the fuss was about

Our adventure began with a flight to Nuremberg, where we spent a night before embarking on our cruise. I'm so glad we did. Nuremberg is a beautiful Bavarian city, rich in history and packed with character. Its medieval old town, charming squares and riverside setting made it the perfect place to ease into the holiday before boarding our floating hotel the following day

First Impressions of VIVA River Cruises

Viva

If you haven't come across VIVA River Cruises before, they're a German river cruise line offering a modern, contemporary take on river cruising.

From the moment we stepped onboard, the ship felt bright, stylish and welcoming. Everything was beautifully presented without feeling overly formal, creating a relaxed atmosphere that suited the pace of river cruising perfectly.

One of VIVA's biggest selling points is its excellent all-inclusive offering. Throughout the cruise, wines, beers, spirits, cocktails, speciality coffees, soft drinks and even the mini bar in your cabin are included, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the experience without worrying about the bill at the end.

The food was another highlight. Every meal was beautifully presented with plenty of choice, combining regional flavours with international favourites, and there was always something to tempt you.

A Different Approach to River Cruising

One thing I particularly liked about VIVA is that shore excursions aren't automatically included.

For some travellers this might seem unusual, but for me it was actually one of the things that makes the brand stand out.

Rather than following a large guided group every time the ship docks, you're free to explore each destination however you choose. Whether that's wandering through cobbled streets, stopping for coffee in a local café, visiting museums or simply soaking up the atmosphere, the day is entirely yours. If you'd rather have a guided experience, excursions are available to book, so you still have that option.

It's a style of travel that really suits independent travellers who enjoy discovering places at their own pace.

Service That Simply Works - As a German-owned cruise line, VIVA reflects that sense of efficiency.

The crew were consistently friendly, welcoming and attentive, but without being over the top. Service was professional and relaxed, and everything seemed to run effortlessly in the background, allowing guests to simply enjoy their holiday.

An International Atmosphere- Another thing worth mentioning is the mix of guests onboard.

VIVA attracts travellers from across Europe and beyond, so while English is widely spoken, you may well find yourself in the minority as a UK guest. It gave the cruise a more international feel and created an atmosphere that felt authentically European

If you're looking for a cruise with a largely British clientele, another river cruise line may suit you better. But if you enjoy meeting people from different countries and experiencing a more international ambience, VIVA is an excellent choice.

The Danube in May - We were incredibly fortunate with the weather.

Travelling in May meant warm sunshine, blue skies and perfect sightseeing temperatures throughout the cruise. It was warm enough to spend hours on the Sun Deck watching the scenery glide past, yet comfortable enough for exploring every destination.

One of the biggest differences between ocean and river cruising is that there's always something to see.

As we sailed along the Danube, we passed vineyards climbing the hillsides, medieval castles, colourful villages, elegant churches and peaceful riverside communities. Every bend in the river revealed another beautiful view, making the journey just as memorable as the destinations themselves.

Regensburg

Our first stop was the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg. With its beautifully preserved medieval centre, colourful buildings and narrow cobbled streets, it feels like stepping back in time. There are lovely cafés, independent shops and hidden squares around every corner, making it an absolute pleasure to explore at a leisurely pace.

Passau

Known as the City of Three Rivers, Passau sits at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers.

It's an elegant city with colourful architecture, picturesque streets and stunning riverside views. St Stephen's Cathedral is well worth a visit, while simply wandering through the old town gives you a real feel for its charm.

Melk and the Wachau Valley

Sailing through Austria's Wachau Valley was one of the highlights of the entire cruise. This UNESCO-listed stretch of the Danube is famous for its rolling vineyards, charming villages, fruit orchards and hilltop castles. It truly feels like cruising through a postcard.

Our stop in Melk gave us the chance to admire the magnificent Benedictine Abbey, one of Austria's most famous landmarks, sitting high above the river.

Vienna

Vienna effortlessly combines imperial grandeur with a relaxed café culture.

From magnificent architecture and elegant boulevards to beautiful parks and historic coffee houses, it's a city full of culture and history. Whether you're admiring the grand buildings, browsing the boutiques or enjoying a slice of traditional Sachertorte, Vienna has a timeless elegance that's hard not to love.

Vienna

Budapest – A Truly Spectacular Finale

If I had to choose one destination that completely stole my heart, it would be Budapest.

Arriving by river is an unforgettable experience. As the ship approaches the city, the skyline unfolds before you, with the magnificent Hungarian Parliament Building standing proudly on the banks of the Danube, the historic Buda Castle overlooking the river and the famous Chain Bridge linking the two sides of the city.

Budapest is made up of Buda and Pest, each with its own distinct character. Buda is the historic, hilltop side, full of cobbled streets, stunning viewpoints and centuries of history. Pest is vibrant and cosmopolitan, with grand boulevards, impressive architecture, cafés, restaurants and bustling squares.

I absolutely loved Budapest. It has a wonderful energy, blending history with modern city life, and everywhere you look there's another beautiful building or spectacular view. Walking along the riverbank, crossing the Chain Bridge and simply taking in the atmosphere made it one of my favourite European cities.

Budapest

If you're considering this itinerary, I'd highly recommend adding an extra night or two in Budapest after the cruise. It's a city that deserves much more than a single day, and I already know I'll be returning.

Would I Sail with VIVA Again?

Yes.! VIVA River Cruises won't be the perfect fit for everyone, but its great for those that want to travel more independently

If you enjoy organised excursions every day and a predominantly British onboard atmosphere, another river cruise line may suit you better.#

However, if you're looking for stylish ships, excellent all-inclusive value, delicious food, the freedom to explore independently and a relaxed international atmosphere, VIVA River Cruises are a great  choice.

From the medieval streets of Nuremberg and Regensburg to the vineyards of the Wachau Valley, the elegance of Vienna and the unforgettable beauty of Budapest, this journey was everything I hoped a river cruise would be.

It was relaxed, scenic, immersive and incredibly easy to fall in love with.
