Costa Daurada Mini Break
Salou
A mini break for the thrills of the theme park plus the historic towns on the Costa Daurada.

With only a 1 hr 45 min flight from Gatwick and in 10 mins through Reus Airport with the new EES system, we picked up our hire car and off we drove for just 10 minutes to Reus centre.
We had a mooch around
this lovely city with its cafe lined squares, quaint streets and after a lovely coffee and croissant plus the usual
people watching in the square we drove onto Cambrils which was 20 minutes towards the coast.
This is a beach town with a wide and long promenade, seafood restaurants along the front and lovely back
streets with independent shops.

After lunch at one of those lovely seafront restaurants it was time to drive to our hotel in Salou, right opposite PortAventura World (15 minutes). The hotel was
incredibly cheap as it was out of season, very surprising for what was included.
Hotel
The food on half
board basis was plentiful and you could always find something to eat. It
wasn't top top quality but for the price we paid, it was incredible value.
The facilities for
families are really good, large attractive pool, 10 pool tables,
entertainment lounge, quieter bar, table football and much more. They have a
large gym, hydro pool, jacuzzi's, steam room, massage tables, sauna and a Beer
Spa, you sit in a barrel bath for 2 with a beer tap to pour your beers!!
PortAventura World
The park is a 15
minute walk from our hotel so off we set to get back on our favourite rides and
yet again it was amazing. Shambala is absolutely our favourite.
Tip: There is an Express
10 fastpass to most of the top 10 rides and at 49 euros we thought this was a
good price to not have to queue.
Although its out of
season there were a lot of Spanish school groups and some rides were closed.
Ferrari World only opens from 4.30pm til.10pm until peak season kicks in.
We had a great day
even though there was a thunderstorm around 3pm which stopped the rides for a
while.
Tarragona
The next day we drove
to Tarragona, around 20 mins, what a beautiful town. Full of history, Roman Ampitheatre and lots of ruins from 2 centuries ago.
The town is
beautiful, old, characterful, cafes, cathedrals, shopping, by the sea, we spent
all day there.
We didnt get time to
walk the underground tunnels so its an excuse to come back some day. If you are
in the area, you must visit, its so quaint.
Ferrari Land
Today was the day to
go back around PortAventura Park and also to the next door Ferrari Land, which only opens in the
evening out of season.
Tip: we arrived at the
entrance to Ferrari Land 30 mins before opening and then ran to Red Force once
through, we only ended up queuing for 20 mins before getting on the ride as
this is the first one people rush to.
Red Force is the
fastest and tallest roller coaster in Europe!! (As of May 2026).
Flying Dreams is a
simulator and worth doing as well for the feel good factor. They have other
rides in there as well.
The Ferrari's they
have in their showroom are amazing, free to enter as well.
Both ways at the
airport we beat the check in queues by only having hand luggage and sailed
through EES in a minute or so.
It was a great way to spend a few days in the sun and to see both sides of this amazing coastal region.
