Legend of the Seas Launch Sailing - My onboard experience
Stepping Aboard Royal Caribbean’s Brand-New Legend of the Seas
At the end of June I had the absolute pleasure of being invited on the trade launch sailing of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship: Legend of the Seas. As the third Icon-class ship, she shares the coveted title of largest ship at sea with her sister ships, and from the moment I stepped on board it was clear this is a ship designed to surprise, delight and entertain at every turn.
This wasn’t just a ship visit; it was a chance for me to really experience life on board, so I can share first-hand insight with my clients and match them to the right cruise holiday.
First Impressions & Our Balcony Cabin
We stayed in a beautiful oceanview balcony cabin, which felt like a calm little sanctuary in the middle of this incredible floating resort.
Light, modern décor and clever storage made the space feel open and airy.
The balcony quickly became one of my favourite spots: perfect for that first quiet coffee of the day or a peaceful moment watching the sea roll by.
The bed was extremely comfortable, and the cabin design made it easy to unpack, feel at home and forget we were technically in the middle of the ocean.
As part of the launch, we were also able to tour a range of different cabin types across the ship. From cosy interior rooms to spacious suites and family-friendly layouts, it was fascinating to see how cleverly the space is used. This means I now have a really clear feel for the pros and cons of each category, and I can confidently recommend the perfect cabin type for every client, whether you prioritise budget, space, views or family-friendly features.
Surfside: A Family Haven for Younger Children
One of the areas that really stood out to me was Surfside: a fantastic haven of fun created especially with families and younger children in mind.
It feels like its own little neighbourhood at sea, with colourful, playful spaces where children can splash, play and explore while parents relax nearby. There is a lovely balance of:
- Interactive water features and shallow splash areas for little ones
- Comfortable places for adults to sit, watch and unwind
- Easy access to family-friendly food options, so no one needs to go far when the inevitable “I’m hungry!” strikes
For families with younger children, Surfside makes life on board feel incredibly easy and relaxed, with everything you need close at hand and a constant sense of fun in the air.
Thrills at Sea: Waterpark & Crown’s Edge
Legend of the Seas offers playground for thrill seekers.
There is a brilliant waterpark on board with six slides, offering something for everyone. It is ideal for families, teens and anyone who enjoys that theme-park-style excitement without leaving the ship.
For a completely different kind of adrenaline rush, there is the incredible Crown’s Edge ziplining experience. Suspended high above the ocean with dramatic views all around, it is one of those “wow” moments that you will talk about long after you get home. If you are the kind of person who loves pushing yourself a little out of your comfort zone, Crown’s Edge is a must-try.
A Foodie Playground at Sea
One of the big highlights of any Royal Caribbean sailing is the food, and Legend of the Seas really delivers on variety. During my time on board I was able to sample a wide range of eateries;
- Windjammer: The go-to buffet venue, perfect for relaxed breakfasts and lunches with plenty of choice for all tastes and dietary needs.
- Main Dining Room: A more traditional restaurant setting with attentive service, beautifully presented dishes and that sense of occasion you want in the evenings.
- AquaDome Market: A brilliant concept with multiple food stations and casual bites, ideal for grazing or a quick, tasty lunch between activities.
- Park Café: Great for lighter options and grab-and-go bites, especially handy if you want a quick refuel before heading back out to explore the ship.
- El Loco Fresh: A must for anyone who loves Mexican flavours, with tacos and nachos that are perfect for a sunny sea day.
- Sorrento’s Pizza: This quickly becomes a favourite stop for many guests. Fresh slices, open late, and exactly what you fancy after an evening show or a few drinks.
- Pearl Café: A cosy little spot for casual snacks and drinks, ideal when you just want something simple without sitting down for a full meal.
- Playmakers Sports Bar: Great fun for sports fans or anyone who enjoys a lively bar with classic American-style bites and big screens showing the latest games.
What really stood out was the balance between quality and convenience. Whether you wanted a relaxed bite in your shorts and T‑shirt or something a little more dressy in the evening, there was always somewhere that felt just right.
Evenings on Board: Quizzes, Cocktails & Atmosphere
The ship truly comes alive in the evenings, and I loved getting a feel for the entertainment and social areas.
We joined in with trivia quiz games in the Schooner Bar, which had that classic Royal Caribbean atmosphere: friendly competition, lots of laughs and a great way to meet fellow guests. If your idea of fun includes a drink in hand and a bit of brain-teasing, this is the place to be.
I also spent time soaking up the Promenade atmosphere. This is very much the heart of the ship, with bars, shops and people wandering, chatting and enjoying the buzz. Sitting with drinks in the Ale & Arrow while people-watching and enjoying the live entertainment was a real highlight. It felt like being in a stylish, vibrant city street, just with the added bonus of being surrounded by the ocean.
A Little Adventure: Escape Room Fun
One of the more unique experiences we tried was one of the escape rooms on board. It was:
- Cleverly themed
- Well designed with challenging but doable puzzles
- A fantastic way to spend time with friends, family or fellow travellers
If you enjoy problem-solving, teamwork and a bit of adrenaline as the clock counts down, I highly recommend adding an escape room session to your cruise to-do list. It was honestly one of the standout memories from the trip.
Who I’d Recommend Legend of the Seas For
Based on my time on this launch sailing, I would especially recommend Legend of the Seas for:
- Families who want non-stop entertainment, plenty of dining choice and dedicated spaces like Surfside that are perfect for younger children.
- Couples looking for a mix of fun, chilled sea days and great evening venues to unwind in.
- Friends and groups who love activities, quizzes, lively bars and that “something always going on” vibe, with the option to ramp up the thrills at the waterpark or on Crown’s Edge.
With her scale, facilities and energy, Legend of the Seas is ideal if you like your holidays filled with variety: one day relaxing by the pool or enjoying a leisurely lunch, the next tackling an escape room, flying high on a zipline, or trying a new restaurant or bar.
