Summer at Sea on MSC Grandiosa: A Family-Friendly Mediterranean Adventure

This August I swapped the traditional resort holiday for a week at sea on board MSC Grandiosa, sailing round-trip from Palma. Over seven nights we explored Barcelona, Cannes, Genoa, La Spezia and Civitavecchia, all while enjoying the comfort of our balcony cabin and the ease of having drinks packages included. It was a wonderful reminder of just how effortless and great value a Mediterranean fly-cruise can be for families.

Setting Sail from Palma

Our holiday began in Palma, a fantastic embarkation port with its sweeping bay and easy access from the airport. Once on board MSC Grandiosa we settled into our balcony cabin. Having that private outdoor space was a real highlight: mornings with a coffee watching the ship glide into a new port, and evenings unwinding with the sea breeze and ever-changing views.

The included drinks package made life incredibly simple. Whether it was a pre-dinner aperitif, a glass of wine with our meal or a soft drink by the pool, not having to think about the bill each time meant we could just relax and enjoy ourselves.

Life on Board: Dining & Atmosphere

Like many large ships, MSC Grandiosa has a big buffet restaurant that is open for much of the day. It did exactly what it promised: plenty of choice, quick and easy, and ideal for casual meals or grabbing a bite between activities. At peak times it could feel a little chaotic, as you would expect with lots of families on board, but once you know the quieter corners and less busy times it becomes much more manageable.

Where the ship really shone for us, though, was in the speciality dining. We treated ourselves to dinners in:

Butcher’s Cut: the ship’s American-style steakhouse, perfect for a more indulgent evening. 

L’Atelier Bistrot: a charming French bistro with a lovely, intimate atmosphere.

Hola! Tacos & Cantina: A casual, vibrant Latin American spot featuring street-style tacos and Mexican favourites.

The meals and service were outstanding. The food felt genuinely special, beautifully presented and full of flavour, and the staff were absolutely top notch: warm, professional and attentive without being intrusive.

A Ship Made for Families

MSC Grandiosa is particularly well suited to families. There is a wide range of kids’ clubs, carefully split by age, so children and teens can enjoy activities tailored to them. From arts and crafts, games and themed parties to more tech-focused fun for older children, the programme is designed to keep younger guests happy and engaged, giving parents some well-earned downtime.

Beyond the kids’ clubs there is plenty on board to keep everyone entertained, from pools and waterslides to shows and lounges. One of the biggest advantages of a cruise for families is how easy it is: you unpack once, yet wake up somewhere new most mornings.

Our itinerary gave us a lovely snapshot of the Western Mediterranean:

Barcelona: A vibrant city where you can dip into Gaudí’s architecture, stroll down Las Ramblas or simply enjoy tapas and people-watching. 

Cannes: Glamorous and polished, ideal for a wander along the seafront and a coffee on a sun-drenched terrace. 

Genoa: A characterful Italian port city with winding streets, historic buildings and a real sense of place. 

La Spezia: Gateway to the Cinque Terre and the beautiful Ligurian coast, as well as nearby Pisa and Florence for those who want to venture further. 

Civitavecchia: The port for Rome, giving you the option to spend the day exploring the Eternal City’s iconic sights.
