Family-Friendly Coolcations: 4 Incredible Trips for Every Season
If your family holidays are less "Please leave me horizontal beside the pool for seven days” and more "Where can we explore next?”, then a coolcation might be right up your street. And despite the name, coolcations aren't just about escaping a summer heatwave. I think of them as holidays filled with fresh air, incredible landscapes, outdoor experiences and actually doing things together. So, if you're ready to swap scorching temperatures for something a little fresher, here are four family-friendly coolcation ideas I'd consider. One for every season!
Spring: Iceland for waterfalls, whales + wild landscapes
If your children would choose waterfalls and wildlife over a waterpark, Iceland could be a brilliant spring adventure.
I'd combine ReykjavÃk with a carefully paced road trip, leaving plenty of time for geothermal pools, waterfalls, dramatic coastlines and wildlife experiences along the way. Spring brings increasingly long days for exploring too, without travelling at the height of the summer season.
The key with families is not to try to see the whole island. I'd rather plan fewer stops, comfortable places to stay and experiences everyone will actually remember than spend half the holiday in the car.
Summer: Norway for the ultimate fjord adventure
Norway gets my vote for families with older children or teens who like a bit of adventure and anyone who doesn't fancy spending their summer fighting over the last sunlounger.
I'd look at combining Bergen with the western fjords, mixing spectacular rail journeys and fjord cruises with kayaking, manageable hikes and plenty of time to simply enjoy the scenery.
Those lovely long summer days give you more freedom to explore, but I still wouldn't fill every hour. One or two well-chosen bases and a mixture of planned experiences and slower days can make this feel like an adventure and a holiday.
Autumn: Switzerland for cosy Alpine adventures
Switzerland in autumn? Oh, I can absolutely see it.
There are beautiful lakes, mountain scenery, scenic trains, pretty villages, gentle walks and a very healthy number of hot-chocolate stops along the way!
For families who like exploring but still appreciate coming back to a gorgeous hotel at the end of the day, this could be such a lovely fit. I'd choose one beautiful Alpine base rather than moving every couple of nights and build easy day adventures around it.
Autumn does require a little more careful planning, as some mountain transport and seasonal attractions may have reduced operating periods, which is exactly the kind of detail I'd check before building the itinerary.
Winter: Finnish Lapland for proper snowy vibes
Of course we couldn't talk about coolcations without Lapland making the list…
For younger children, there's all the Father Christmas excitement, but I actually think Lapland deserves more credit as an adventure destination for older families too.
Enjoy husky rides through snowy forests, reindeer experiences, snowmobiling, cosy cabins and evenings watching the sky for the Northern Lights. I'd pair those bigger experiences with plenty of downtime, because sometimes simply pulling on your thermals and heading outside to play in proper snow is part of the charm.
It's a completely different kind of family holiday, and one that tends to generate those "Do you remember when?" stories for years afterwards.
So, which season belongs to your family?
That's what I love about the coolcation trend: there isn't one version of it.
Your family might want Icelandic waterfalls in spring, Norwegian fjords in summer, Swiss mountains in autumn or snowy Lapland in winter.
Tell me who's travelling, your children's ages, when you can get away and what everyone genuinely enjoys doing, and I can help narrow down the options.
Because the best family holiday isn't necessarily the hottest one, it's the one everyone still talks about afterwards.
