Atlanta with a Toddler... My Honest Review of a Fun-Filled USA Family Break
Family travels with our 2 year old
After a possible move to Atlanta during the Covid years, we always knew we wanted to go and visit to see the amazing homes and towns that we potentially could have moved to. An alternative life for ourselves, and we got to experience this for real, except for 10 days, not forever (yet!)
Flying long haul with a 2‑year‑old can feel like a big step, but Atlanta turned out to be an ideal first US break with a toddler, for us anyway.
We flew direct with Virgin from Manchester, and once we arrived, Atlanta quickly surprised us… yet we realised everything we imagined was becoming real.
It has all the energy of a big American city, but with lots of green spaces, friendly neighbourhoods and plenty to do with little ones.
Where We Explored:
In 10 days, we split our time between the city and nearby towns, which I’d recommend for great family days and moments that are rare, like passing a childrens little league playing baseball in the park, or music playing to the fountains in downtown Atlanta, everything we did was perfect.
- Downtown Atlanta: Great for the main attractions, all fairly close together.
- Buckhead: A smarter, more polished neighbourhood with shopping, restaurants and pockets of green space. Great for those NFL wives to spend their money 😉
- Alpharetta,
Roswell & Suwanee: These smaller towns gave us that “local” feel,
exactly what we wanted. They are clean, relaxed and very family‑friendly,
with parks and open spaces that are perfect when your toddler just needs
to run. Alpharetta is our favourite for sure, and a top tip is to go to
Avalon at Alpharetta, and Up on the Roof at Alpharetta town square, for
some wow moments.
Toddler‑Friendly Highlights:
· Children’s Museum of Atlanta: This was a huge hit with our 2‑year‑old. It is completely hands‑on, colourful and designed for little ones to touch, explore and play. Ideal for a morning or afternoon, especially if the weather is very hot or rainy.
· Parks & Playgrounds: What stood out across Atlanta and the surrounding towns was how many parks there are. With a toddler, these became our secret weapon: an easy way to reset between attractions. We could let our little one run around while we grabbed a breather and a coffee.
Big‑Name Attractions That Worked With a Toddler:
· World of Coca‑Cola: Bright, fun and very visual. Our toddler loved the colours and movement, and as adults we found it interesting too. It is not too serious, so it felt easy and enjoyable with a young child in tow. It is a stable for an Atlanta itinerary but I must add, a little disappointing for the home of Coca Cola… don’t go thinking BIG, its just a nice way to mark their home in a small way.
· Georgia Aquarium: One of the absolute standouts. The huge tanks, colourful fish and gentle lighting make it incredibly engaging for little ones. If you only fit in one “big” attraction, this would be my top choice for families. If only we didn’t have to run around after our little boy, it may have been a little more relaxing haha.
· Zoo Atlanta: A classic zoo day, but nicely laid out and not overwhelming. We could go at our own pace, take breaks, and still see plenty. There is shade and seating, which makes a big difference when you are pushing a buggy or wrangling a tired toddler. Plus, a mini go-ape style that our little boy could try out, without having to miss out as there is the big-kid style too.
Extra Experiences You Should Not Miss:
· Atlanta Braves at The Battery: You do not actually need to buy a ticket to soak up the baseball atmosphere. The Battery, just outside the stadium, has big screens, food, music and a great buzz on game days. It is perfect for families who want the experience without expecting a toddler to sit through the entire game inside.
· A Southern Rodeo: If you can, add a rodeo to your plans. It feels very “Southern USA”, loud, colourful and completely different to anything at home. It is one of those unique experiences that sticks in your memory.
·
Piedmont Park: Piedmont
Park quickly became one of our favourite spots. It has wide lawns and paths
with great skyline views, play areas where little ones can run free, and also
boasts a swimming pool that opens in the summer months, ideal on hot days.
…We did so much more, but trying to keep this blog short!
If you are considering a US break with a young child and want something a bit different from the obvious choices, I would genuinely recommend Atlanta. It felt exciting but manageable and gave us a lovely mix of “wow” moments and simple family time outdoors.
