If you are looking for a romantic Mediterranean break that feels a little under the radar, Porto Cervo on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is a brilliant choice. It is a discreet, upmarket marina resort that attracts those in the know, with glossy yachts, elegant restaurants and beaches that genuinely rival the Caribbean. We thoroughly enjoyed our time, and know that we will be back in the years to come.

We stayed slightly above the resort at boutique style property ‘Hotel Balocco’. It gives you a real sense of sanctuary, as its set on the hillside, small, intimate and wonderfully relaxing, with a pool area that never feels crowded. We were always able to find a sunbed every day, there was never a time of day that felt too busy, we could just be together and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Evenings were a highlight and something we still talk about now. A little pre-drink in the hotel restaurant, lingering over drinks at the bar while plates of local Sardinian meats and cheeses appeared, and the views over the hills and towards Porto Cervo softened in the sunset light, and seeing those super-yachts roll into the bay. Afterwards, it is a short stroll down into the outer parts of the resort, perfect for hand‑in‑hand walks, browsing the boutiques or a romantic dinner by the marina.

Sardinia’s beaches are a major part of the magic. From Hotel Balocco, a complimentary shuttle takes you to a nearby beach, making it effortless to switch from poolside calm to turquoise sea and soft white sand for the day.

Porto Cervo works beautifully for couples who want quiet luxury, space to breathe and a feeling of being somewhere special but not overrun by tourists. Its busy enough in the summer, but mostly by those hopping of their yachts or those who have had the expert guidance to be ‘in the know’ that this stunning and exclusive place is there. You can uncover the most charming hotels, the best local spots and those little touches that turn a lovely holiday into something truly memorable.
