Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending time on board Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral during her call into the Port of Tyne, and I came away genuinely impressed.
From the moment I stepped on, the atmosphere felt warm, relaxed and reassuringly traditional: classic teak decks, welcoming lounges and genuinely friendly crew who clearly know their guests by name.
First Impressions: Warm, Relaxed and Traditional
Balmoral has a very different feel from many of the big, modern resort-style ships. There is no blaring music or gimmicks as you walk on, just a calm, welcoming environment that immediately puts you at ease.
The décor is classic and understated, with plenty of natural light and comfortable seating areas that invite you to slow down and simply enjoy being at sea.
What struck me most was how personal everything felt. You really get the sense that regular guests are remembered, that preferences are noticed, and that the crew take genuine pride in looking after “their” travellers. It felt less like a floating resort and more like a traditional, country-house-style hotel at sea.
Public Spaces & Lounges: Room To Breathe
As I explored the public spaces, I was pleasantly surprised by the sense of space and calm. Despite Balmoral being a smaller, more intimate ship, there were plenty of quiet corners to sit with a book, chat over a coffee or simply gaze out at the coastline.
Lounges and bars are thoughtfully laid out with big windows and cosy seating, and there is a real focus on conversation and relaxation rather than constant activity. It is the kind of ship where you can easily find a favourite spot and make it “yours” for the duration of the cruise.
Dining: Traditional, Unhurried Meals
I had the chance to look around the dining venues, which continue that same classic, comfortable feel. Think traditional restaurant-style service, white tablecloths and time to enjoy your meal, rather than rushed buffets and crowded dining rooms.
There is enough variety to keep things interesting on a longer voyage, but the emphasis is on quality, friendly service and a relaxed pace. For guests who like the ritual of dinner at sea, Balmoral feels like a very good fit.
Cabins: Comfortable Retreats at Sea
Touring the cabins gave a good sense of what life on board would actually feel like. Cabins are designed to be comfortable retreats rather than flashy showpieces, with a focus on good storage, practical layouts and those all-important sea views.
Again, the atmosphere was calm and homely, more “classic cruise” than ultra-modern, and ideal for guests who prioritise comfort, quiet and a good night’s sleep.
Who I Think Balmoral Suits
Balmoral felt to me like a ship designed for people who love the journey as much as the destinations. With her smaller size and intimate atmosphere, she is perfectly suited to:
Scenic cruising, where you want to be out on deck or in a lounge watching the coastline glide by
Discovery-led itineraries, where ports and routes are chosen for interest rather than simply sunshine and shopping
Guests who appreciate a very British style of service, traditional touches and a more relaxed dress and dining style
If you are looking for huge waterparks, neon lights and late-night crowds, Balmoral probably is not the right ship. If, however, you prefer an unhurried, comfortable and personal cruise experience, she could be an excellent choice.
