Undiscovered Luxury
Montenegro
Dreaming of a more experiential Luxury in the Adriatic.
Montenegro in May: My Luxury Summit Experience on the Adriatic
There are some destinations that sneak up on you. Montenegro is not showy or obvious at first glance, yet it slowly reveals itself in layers: glassy bays, honey-stone old towns and mountains that seem to rise straight out of the Adriatic. Visiting on a luxury summit in May gave me the perfect opportunity to experience the country at its most exclusive and inspiring, while really getting under its skin for future client trips.
First Impressions: A Small Country with Big-City Style
Touching down in Montenegro, you immediately notice the contrast. On one side: dramatic peaks, thick forest and twisting mountain roads. On the other: sleek marinas, polished waterfront promenades and a new wave of luxury hotels that would not look out of place in the French or Italian Riviera.
May is a particularly special time to be here. The days are warm enough for alfresco lunches and late-evening drinks overlooking the water, yet the height-of-summer crowds have not arrived. It feels like you have front-row access to the best of Montenegro, with space to breathe.
The Bay of Kotor: Medieval Drama Meets Modern Luxury
Much of my summit time was spent around the Bay of Kotor, a region that has genuinely earned its “fjord of the Adriatic” nickname. Sailing across the bay, the water is framed by jagged mountains and tiny stone villages that look like they have barely changed in centuries.
Kotor Old Town is a highlight in itself: narrow alleyways, small shaded squares and weathered stone churches that suddenly open up into lively piazzas. In between summit sessions, I wandered past artisan shops and tucked-away cafés, stopping for strong local coffee and people watching.
Yet just around the bay, you discover a very different side to Montenegro. Contemporary, design-led hotels and chic waterfront properties offer rooftop pools, private jetties and serious spa credentials. Stepping from a medieval old town into a glamorous marina-front setting in a matter of minutes is typical of the contrasts that make this area so appealing for a luxury short break or a stylish twin-centre.

Learning the Destination: Why Montenegro Works So Well for Clients
The summit itself was a chance to experience the destination in the way my clients would. Throughout my stay I was constantly thinking: who would this suit, and how can I shape it to different styles of travel?
What really stood out: Compact but varied: Within a relatively short driving distance you can move from polished coastal resorts to quiet, traditional villages and up into the mountains. It is perfect for those who like to mix relaxation with gentle exploration.
Old world charm with new world comfort: Montenegro blends centuries-old architecture and history with contemporary luxury hotels, high-end dining and excellent spa facilities.
Superb for shoulder seasons: May and late September in particular offer that sweet spot of pleasant temperatures, softer light and a more relaxed feel around the main sights. Spending time here in May allowed me to see how the destination really feels just before peak season: restaurant terraces open and buzzing, yacht decks dotted across the bay, yet without the density of July and August.
Food, Wine and Evenings on the Water. Meals were a highlight of the summit. Fresh seafood features heavily: grilled fish, octopus and prawns paired with local olive oil, garden vegetables and crisp local white wines. Long, lingering lunches by the water quickly become a daily ritual.
In the evenings, the atmosphere shifts. The lights of the bay reflect on the water, live music drifts from small bars, and hotel terraces fill with a cosmopolitan mix of guests. Sitting with a glass of wine, looking across the water to the illuminated walls of Kotor or the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains, it is easy to see why Montenegro is starting to rival some of Europe’s more established luxury hotspots.
Beyond the Coast: Mountains, National Parks and Quiet Moments
Although my summit was based on the coast, I also had the chance to learn more about Montenegro’s inland regions. This is a country where, within a day’s excursion, you can swap the Adriatic for alpine-style scenery, glacial lakes and vast national parks.
It is ideal for clients who like to balance a few days of spa, pool and fine dining with something more active. Think gentle hiking, lake cruises, whitewater rafting for the adventurous, or simply a scenic drive through mountain passes followed by a traditional lunch in a rustic village.

Why Montenegro Has Earned Its Place on My Luxury Hotlist
Returning from this summit, Montenegro is firmly on my list of recommendations for:
Luxury short breaks for couples who have “done” the big-name Med destinations and want somewhere a little more surprising but still effortlessly stylish.
Twin-centres combining Montenegro with nearby countries for a broader Adriatic itinerary.
Relaxed celebrations such as anniversaries or milestone birthdays, where the blend of scenery, food and boutique luxury feels very special without ever feeling overly formal.
It is that combination of scale and intimacy that really stayed with me. Montenegro is big on drama and variety, yet it still feels personable and welcoming. As a Travel Counsellor, having seen it first-hand in May means I can now confidently shape trips that capture the very best of the destination, at the right time of year and in the right style for each client.
