Rooftop Cocktails in Valletta
Malta A perfect escape in the heart of the Med.
If you are looking for an easy, sun drenched escape with plenty of character, Malta is a brilliant choice. Just a three hour flight from the UK, it combines a warm welcome, English widely spoken and a rich history with stylish hotels, great food and crystal clear sea.
On my own visit I stayed in Mellieha, in the quieter north of the island, and it was ideal: a soft sandy bay, relaxed evenings and simple connections to the rest of Malta.
Valletta & Beyond Culture With A View
Malta’s tiny capital, Valletta, is a real highlight for adults
Ornate Baroque architecture and narrow, atmospheric streets
St John’s Co Cathedral and the sweeping views from Upper Barrakka Gardens
Rooftop bars and terraces that are perfect for sunset drinks
A harbour cruise past The Three Cities adds a romantic, cinematic feel, as you sail between honey coloured fortifications and church domes.
Mellieha, Sliema & St Julian’s: Where To Stay
Mellieha: My own base on the island. Quieter, with a large sandy bay, sea view restaurants and a more laid back, grown up pace. Ideal if you want beach time by day and relaxed dinners by night.
Sliema & St Julian’s: Best if you prefer a livelier scene, with waterfront promenades, chic hotels, lidos built into the rocks and a big choice of bars and restaurants.
Nothing is very far away, so it is easy to combine lazy pool days with a little exploring.
Gozo, Comino & The Sea
Malta really comes into its own out on the water
Gozo A short ferry ride away, with a slower pace, small villages, scenic walks and quiet bays.
Comino & the Blue Lagoon
Striking turquoise water, best enjoyed on a smaller boat trip to dodge the busiest times.
The sea is exceptionally clear, making Malta a great choice for snorkelling, diving or simply swimming from rocky platforms straight into deep blue water.
Food, Wine & Evenings Out
For adults, Malta is all about long evenings and good food:
Fresh seafood in harbourfront restaurants, especially in Marsaxlokk
Traditional dishes ,alongside Mediterranean favourites
Local wines that often surprise visitors, particularly crisp whites and rosés
Add in rooftop cocktails in Valletta or a waterfront dinner in St Julian’s and Malta feels effortlessly grown up.
