Boutique Cruising

I was lucky enough to recently spend a few nights on board Oceania Vista, one of Oceania Cruises’ newest ships. With only around 1,200 guests and 800 crew, think more floating boutique hotel than one of the larger, louder ships at sea.

From the moment I walked on board, the atmosphere was calm and quietly refined. Being an adults-only cruise line certainly contributes to that overall feeling: no loud pool games or packed kids clubs, just a relaxed, grown-up vibe throughout the ship.

Unlike many familiarisation trips, I had my own cabin, which felt like a real treat. It was spacious, beautifully finished and had everything I needed. With room service included, I almost felt like I didn’t need to leave my cabin at all. However, the restaurant offering was simply too good to miss.

With speciality restaurants included within your fare, it is easy to see why Oceania is so renowned for its food. I experienced The Polo Grill, where you can indulge in perfectly cooked steak and lobster, along with Toscana, the wonderful Italian venue. Your very first experience there is choosing your olive oil and bread from what must be one of the largest selections at sea. The main dining room was also a real highlight, with so many options for each course that I genuinely felt spoilt for choice.

Breakfast and lunch were events in themselves, and the food overall was some of the best I have experienced on a cruise ship. The main pool area was a delight, with attentive bar-to-sunbed service that made it all too easy to linger for hours in the sun. This is certainly a ship where you will never go hungry.

Evenings on board offered a choice of entertainment and a selection of bars, so “boredom” is not a word that springs to mind. On sea days, the spa is a great option for some extra indulgence, and there is even a padel court for those who like to stay active.

I only had one port stop, in Le Havre, and chose to take a taxi to the charming town of Honfleur. It was a delight: cobbled streets, pretty harbour views, a leisurely lunch and a gentle wander were the perfect way to spend a few hours on land.

For me, Oceania sits a clear step above the likes of Celebrity Cruises and Princess, and slightly below the ultra-luxury lines. The food and atmosphere on board were second to none, and I would not hesitate to recommend it, especially for those who prefer an adults-only cruise experience. It is laidback and understated, yet the service is fabulous and the overall feeling is one of relaxed, easy luxury.
