Stepping Aboard the World’s Newest, Biggest Cruise Ship
My Preview of Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas
There are some moments in your travel career that stay with you forever, and my recent preview sailing on the world’s newest and biggest cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, was one of them. For those who do not know me, I used to work for Royal Caribbean and I have been lucky enough to sail on nearly every ship in the fleet. The only ships I had not experienced were the brand-new Icon Class. So this was my very first time stepping on board this class of ship and, if I am honest, I did not think they could get any better than what I had already seen. I was wrong. In the best possible way. From the moment I stepped on board for the preview sailing to celebrate her launch, I was absolutely blown away.
First Impressions: Straight Into the Heart of the Action
Unlike many ships where you gradually “discover” the main hub, Legend of the Seas makes an immediate statement. The gangway brings you straight into the Royal Promenade on Deck 5, and it is a real goosebump moment.
You are instantly welcomed by the impressive sight of The Pearl, a spectacular central feature and true design icon of the ship. It is not just a piece of art, it is a focal point that gives the whole Promenade a sense of drama and excitement. As someone who knows Royal Caribbean ships inside out, it was one of those “wow, they really have taken this to the next level” moments.
If you are lucky enough to board an Icon Class ship like Legend of the Seas, here is my number one boarding-day tip: Head straight to The Hideaway. The Hideaway is the adults-only pool area and, on boarding day, not everyone has discovered it yet. That makes it the perfect place to start your holiday in a calm, stylish way while everyone else is still exploring and queuing for lunch.
Sipping a cocktail, looking out over the water from the infinity pool, on the newest and biggest cruise ship in the world, was such a pinch-me moment. It felt like the perfect way to begin our Legend of the Seas adventure!

Explore the Eight Neighbourhoods Onboard
One of the things that makes Legend of the Seas so unique is the way the ship is divided into eight distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own personality and pace. It’s so well designed you don’t feel as if you’re at sea with thousands of people. You can stroll from leafy gardens to sky high thrills in just a few steps, yet each space feels like its own little world.
AquaDome
Perched high at the forward of the ship, AquaDome is all glass, ocean views and
calm by day. It is the perfect spot to unwind with a drink, and simply soak up
the horizon. After dark, the whole venue transforms into an immersive
entertainment hub, with spectacular high-diving and acrobatic shows that make
full use of the soaring ceilings and dramatic staging – this show is not to be
missed!
Central Park
In the heart of the ship, Central Park feels more like a chic city garden than
a cruise deck. This open air oasis is home to over 30,000 real plants and
trees, with winding pathways, tucked-away benches and the soft sound of live
music drifting through the greenery. By evening, the surrounding specialty
restaurants light up, creating a romantic, al fresco atmosphere for dinner and
drinks. One of my favourite areas on the ship!
Thrill Island
If you love an adrenaline rush, Thrill Island is where you will spend most of your
time. This is home to Category 6, the biggest waterpark at sea, with
multi-storey slides and racing chutes, plus Crown’s Edge, the skywalk
experience that takes them right out over the ocean. It is loud, energetic and
designed for those “I can’t believe I just did that” moments.
Surfside
Created especially for families with younger children, Surfside is bright,
playful and packed with kid-friendly fun. Little ones can splash in dedicated
water play areas, ride the colourful carousel and enjoy easy, relaxed dining
options that work around nap times and early bedtimes. Parents can stay close
to the action without feeling like they are missing out!
Chill Island
Chill Island is the ship’s main pool district and the perfect contrast to
Thrill Island. Spanning multiple decks, it offers seven pools, whirlpools and
generous lounging areas, so there is always somewhere to stretch out with a
book or a cocktail. Whether they prefer a livelier pool with music or a quieter
corner for sunbathing, there is a spot to match every mood.
The Hideaway
For grown-ups looking for that beach-club vibe, The Hideaway is adults only and
all about laid-back luxury. Think an iconic suspended infinity pool, loungers
and daybeds, chilled lounge music and sea views in every direction. It is the
ideal place for long, lazy afternoons that blend seamlessly into sunset.
Royal Promenade
At the ship’s core, the Royal Promenade is the buzzing indoor boulevard where
guests gravitate throughout the day and late into the night. Here they will
find shops, cafes and bars, including the Pearl Cafe. It is a great place to
grab a coffee, people-watch, or meet for pre-dinner drinks before heading off
to a show.
Suite Neighbourhood
For those staying in suites, the Suite Neighbourhood takes the experience up a
level with dedicated spaces away from the crowds. Private sundecks, an
exclusive lounge and a suite-only restaurant give a more intimate, club-like
feel, while still being just moments away from everything happening elsewhere
on the ship.

All Aboard the Royal Railway: Dining by Train at Sea
As we opened the door to our stateroom on the first evening, we were greeted by something I had genuinely never seen on a cruise ship before: two train tickets.
Yes, there is a train on board.
We had been invited to dine at Royal Railway, Legend of the Seas’ experiential dining venue where you are “whisked” around the world, with each course paired to a different destination.
Having dined in many of Royal Caribbean’s speciality restaurants over the years, I can honestly say this was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had at sea. The whole concept is so cleverly done. Legend of the Seas is home to 9 speciality restaurants on board, part of the 28 different dining venues to choose from.
It felt truly special and wonderfully different, and for anyone who loves both food and travel, it is an absolute must-do. On a ship packed with exciting places to eat, Royal Railway is, in my view, one not to be missed.

Ice Magic at Sea: “Fusion”
Just when we thought the first evening could not possibly get any better, it was time for the ice show, Fusion.
Even with all my experience on Royal Caribbean ships, I still find myself slightly awestruck every time I watch a professional ice show at sea. Fusion was no exception: it was a beautiful, high-energy performance with talented skaters, striking costumes and a soundtrack that kept the atmosphere electric throughout.
Sitting there, watching world-class skaters perform intricate routines on an ice rink in the middle of the ocean, I had one of those lovely “how is this even possible?” moments that only a cruise can create.

Fireworks over Malaga: A Perfect Finale
In true Royal Caribbean style, the evening finished with something truly memorable. As we sailed out of Malaga, we were treated to an impressive firework display lighting up the night sky, reflecting off the water and framing this extraordinary new ship in a halo of colour.
Standing on deck, watching the fireworks, surrounded by the buzz and excitement of being on the newest, largest ship in the world, felt like the perfect way to celebrate the launch of Legend of the Seas and everything she represents for the future of cruising.
Why Legend of the Seas Feels So Special
Having worked for Royal Caribbean and having sailed on almost every ship in the fleet, I went on board Legend of the Seas with very high expectations. I genuinely did not think they could push things much further.
Yet this ship still managed to surprise and delight me at every turn.
For me, Legend of the Seas brings together the scale and innovation Royal Caribbean is famous for.
It is bold, imaginative and full of those little “wow” moments that make you fall in love with cruising all over again.
If you would like to know more about sailing on Legend of the Seas or other Royal Caribbean ships, or you are wondering whether this style of ship is right for you, I would be delighted to share more insight and help you find the perfect itinerary.
