My South Africa Journey
A Travel Counsellor's First-Hand Experience
Thinking about visiting South Africa? I recently spent nine days exploring Cape Town, the Garden Route, Pumba Private Game Reserve and Johannesburg. Here's what surprised me, what I'd recommend, and why this incredible destination has earned a place on my "must return" list.
When people think of South Africa, they often picture incredible safaris. Whilst they are undoubtedly spectacular, my recent nine-day educational trip showed me that this remarkable country has so much more to offer.
From cosmopolitan Cape Town and the dramatic scenery of the Cape Peninsula to the tranquil beauty of the Garden Route, a luxury safari at Pumba Private Game Reserve and the thought-provoking history of Johannesburg and Soweto, every day revealed a different side of this diverse destination.
As a Travel Counsellor, one of the most valuable parts of travelling is experiencing destinations first-hand. It allows me to confidently recommend hotels, excursions and itineraries based on personal experience rather than brochures. This journey certainly gave me plenty to recommend.
Cape Town – The Perfect Introduction to South Africa
Our adventure began with two nights in Cape Town, staying at the beautiful Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, perfectly positioned between Table Mountain National Park and the Atlantic Ocean.

Cape Town is a city that effortlessly combines natural beauty, history, culture and world-class food. One day we travelled along the spectacular Chapman's Peak Drive, one of the world's most scenic coastal roads, before visiting the Cape of Good Hope and climbing to the historic Cape Point Lighthouse. We experienced the Cape in all its glory that day, with powerful winds, crashing waves and dramatic coastal scenery making it easy to appreciate just how wild and rugged this corner of South Africa can be.
Another highlight I was particularly looking forward to was visiting Boulders Beach, home to one of the world's only mainland colonies of endangered African penguins. Watching them waddle across the sand and swim in the crystal-clear water was every bit as charming as I'd hoped.
No visit to Cape Town would be complete without Table
Mountain. Reaching the summit on the rotating cableway early in the morning
rewarded us with breathtaking panoramic views before the crowds arrived. We
even met some unexpected residents – the adorable dassies, whose closest living
relatives are, surprisingly, elephants!
The evenings were equally memorable, from cocktails overlooking the Atlantic at the Leopard Bar to an immersive dining experience at Gold Restaurant, where traditional music, dancing and a 14-course Pan-African tasting menu celebrated the continent's incredible diversity. It was such a fun evening.
The Garden Route – A Journey Worth Savouring
Leaving Cape Town, we travelled east along the famous Garden Route, stopping first in the historic town of Swellendam before continuing to the unique lagoon town of Knysna.
Knysna is unlike anywhere else I visited on the trip. Built around a beautiful estuary, with waterways, forests and dramatic coastal scenery, it's a destination that deserves more time than we had to truly explore. During our stay, we experienced the stunning Featherbed Nature Reserve, taking a ferry across the lagoon before travelling by Unimog to spectacular viewpoints overlooking the famous Knysna Heads. A guided walk through ancient milkwood forests completed a wonderful morning immersed in nature.

Our base was the quirky Turbine Hotel & Spa on Thesen Island, a boutique hotel cleverly converted from a former power station. Many of the original turbines and machinery have been incorporated into the design, giving it a unique character while offering all the comforts of a luxury hotel. It's certainly one of the most unusual hotels I've stayed in!
On our way to safari, we also visited the charming Tsitsikamma Village Inn, a characterful hotel that would make an excellent base for anyone exploring this stretch of the Garden Route. Lunch at the wonderfully quirky Marilyn's 50s Diner was a fun stop before continuing our journey.
Pumba Private Game Reserve – Where Luxury Meets the Wild
The moment we arrived at Pumba Private Game Reserve, we knew we were somewhere special. In fact, wildlife greeted us before we had even reached reception, with impala grazing peacefully beside the track.
Our Bush Chalet was simply stunning. Complete with a private viewing deck, outdoor shower, plunge pool and cosy log burner, it perfectly combined luxury with an authentic safari experience. Little touches, such as hot water bottles waiting in our beds each evening and ponchos on the safari vehicles during chilly morning drives, made the stay even more memorable.

The game drives were, quite simply, extraordinary.
With no more than six guests per vehicle and a policy of only two vehicles at any wildlife sighting, every encounter felt intimate and respectful. Over two unforgettable days we saw zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, baboons, warthogs, elephants, but most memorably, Pumba's magnificent white lions and also the rhinos.
But one of the moments that will stay with me was watching a herd of elephants calmly approach and walk right past our vehicle. It was both humbling and exhilarating.
Safari isn't just about spotting the Big Five. It's about slowing down, listening to your expert ranger, appreciating the silence and witnessing animals behaving naturally in their own environment. It is an experience unlike any other.

Johannesburg & Soweto – Discovering South Africa's Story
Our final days were spent in Johannesburg, where we met tourism partners from across South Africa and reunited with fellow Travel Counsellors who had been exploring other regions of the country.
Before flying home, we experienced one final highlight: a community-led Tuk Tuk tour of Soweto.

Exploring Soweto, one of South Africa's largest and most vibrant townships, with a local guide offered a completely different perspective on South Africa. Visiting Constitutional Hill, driving through the backstreets and neighbourhoods and stopping at the Hector Pieterson Memorial brought the country's history vividly to life. Hearing personal stories from those who know the community so well made this one of the most meaningful experiences of the trip.
It was a powerful reminder that South Africa isn't only about breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife—it's also about its people, culture and resilience.
