Costa Rica Holiday Itinerary: Cloud Forests, Coffee Farms & Wild Pacific Beaches

Discover a 15‑day Costa Rica holiday itinerary with volcanoes, cloud forest, wildlife and Pacific beaches, perfect for couples, solos, groups and families with teenagers.

Ian Le-Fevre on 18 Dec 2025

Costa Rica is the place you go when you want your holiday to feel like an adventure, not just a change of sun lounger. Misty cloud forests, smoking volcanos, wildlife‑rich jungles and wide Pacific beaches all fit into one small, welcoming country, threaded together by friendly locals and a genuine commitment to sustainability. It is a destination that rewards curiosity: the more you explore, taste and learn, the richer it becomes. The itinerary I am sharing here is based on a 15‑day Costa Rica private tour my clients took over Christmas and New Year, travelling from San José to Tortuguero, La Fortuna, Monteverde and the laid‑back surf town of Nosara before finishing on a coffee farm. It is a brilliant blueprint for couples, solo travellers, special‑interest groups and families with teenagers or older children who want to combine wildlife, soft adventure and time on the beach, then come home feeling they have really got under the skin of Costa Rica rather than simply passed through.

Costa Rica Holiday Itinerary: Cloud Forests, Coffee Farms & Wild Pacific Beaches

If you are dreaming of a Costa Rica holiday itinerary that goes far beyond a standard beach break, this 2week route is a fantastic place to start. Costa Rica is a country of active volcanoes, wildliferich rainforest, misty cloud forests and golden Pacific beaches, all laced together by warm hospitality and a strong commitment to sustainability.

Over Christmas and New Year my clients travelled on a 15day Costa Rica itinerary that took them from jungle canals to treetop ecolodges and laidback surf towns on the Nicoya Peninsula. They came back absolutely glowing about the wildlife, the people and the sense of adventure.

This style of trip works brilliantly for couples, solo travellers, specialinterest groups and families with teenagers or grownup children who want a Costa Rica adventure holiday with comfort built in.

Why Visit Costa Rica?

Costa Rica packs a huge amount into a single holiday:

  • Incredible wildlife: Sloths, monkeys, toucans, hummingbirds and sea turtles in their natural habitat, not in shows or captivity.
  • Compact yet varied: In one Costa Rica holiday you can explore Caribbean waterways, volcanic hot springs, cloud forest and Pacific beaches.
  • Soft adventure: Ziplining, hiking, waterfall swims, rafting and surfing, all of which can be tailored to different ages and comfort levels.
  • Ecoconscious travel: Protected national parks, wildlife reserves and ecolodges that take sustainability seriously.
  • Warm, genuine people: Local hosts and guides who are proud to share their communities, cuisine and crafts.

If you are looking for a Costa Rica family holiday, a specialinterest group trip or a romantic adventure for two, it is an incredibly rewarding destination.

Best Time To Visit Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a yearround destination, but understanding the seasons helps you choose the right time for your trip.

Dry Season: December To April

  • Sunniest weather, especially on the Pacific coast.
  • Perfect for combining adventure with beach time.
  • Christmas and New Year in Costa Rica are peak weeks, so you need to book early and budget for higher prices, but the atmosphere is wonderfully festive.

Green Season: May To November

  • Lush, vivid landscapes and lighter crowds.
  • Typically bright mornings with dramatic afternoon showers.
  • Often better value, which can suit longer or more indepth itineraries.

For families with teenagers, a Costa Rica Christmas holiday fits school dates neatly and feels very special: think Christmas morning in the rainforest or New Year’s Eve sunsets over the Pacific. Couples and solos with more flexibility often like January to March or the shoulder months for a balance of weather and value.

15Day Costa Rica Holiday Itinerary

Here is the outline of the 2week Costa Rica private tour itinerary my clients enjoyed; designed for adventure yet easy to navigate with their personal guide.

Tour summary

  • Day 1: San José
  • Day 2–3: Tortuguero National Park (Caribbean coast)
  • Day 4–6: La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano
  • Day 7–8: Monteverde cloud forest
  • Day 9–13: Nosara, Nicoya Peninsula (Pacific coast)
  • Day 14: Coffee farm stay near San José
  • Day 15: Departure

Day 1: Arrival In San José

You land in San José and are met by your driver for a private transfer to your boutique hotel. This first night is all about recovering from the flight and easing gently into Costa Rican life before your adventure begins.

San Jose Market

Days 2–3: Tortuguero National Park – Jungle Canals & Sea Turtles

An early start takes you across forested mountains and down into the Caribbean lowlands. Almost immediately you begin to see what makes a Costa Rica nature holiday so special, from cloud forest slopes to pineapple and banana plantations.

By late morning you board a river boat and glide through the canals of Tortuguero National Park, one of the most important green sea turtle nesting sites on earth.

Over two nights you might:

  • Cruise the junglelined waterways with a naturalist guide, spotting howler monkeys, sloths and dazzling birdlife.
  • Hike up Tortuguero Hill for sweeping views of the forest, lagoons and coastline.
  • Visit the small village and turtle conservation museum.
  • In season (July to October), join a strictly controlled night walk to witness turtles nesting on the blacksand beach.

It is an unforgettable start to any Costa Rica wildlife holiday, and hugely inspiring for teenagers and adults alike.

Jungle Lined Waterways

Days 4–6: La Fortuna & Arenal – Volcanoes, Hot Springs & Waterfalls

You then head inland to La Fortuna, overlooked by the perfectly conical Arenal volcano. While Arenal is dormant, underground geothermal activity feeds a network of natural hot springs.

Typical highlights on this part of a Costa Rica adventure itinerary include:

  • A visit to a small organic farm to see how pineapples, sugar cane and other crops are grown in harmony with the land and local communities.
  • A guided hike down to the spectacular La Fortuna Waterfall, followed by a swim in the clear lagoon at its base.
  • A traditional riverside lunch hosted by the Rodriguez family, sharing homecooked Costa Rican dishes and fresh coffee.
  • A guided walk in Arenal Volcano National Park across old lava flows, learning how past eruptions shaped the landscape.
  • A day trip to Tenorio Volcano National Park to admire the skyblue Río Celeste, walk suspension bridges, look for wildlife and enjoy a typical local lunch.

Afternoons often end in the hot springs or by the pool: ideal if your party mixes keen adventurers with those who appreciate a little more relaxation.

Arenal Volcano

Days 7–8: Monteverde – Classic Cloud Forest Experience

Next you travel by road and boat across Lake Arenal, with stunning volcano views, then continue up into the highlands to Monteverde and the cloud forest.

Here you are surrounded by cool mist, mosscoated branches and the soft sounds of birdlife. Many visitors choose a treetop ecolodge where you can wake to clouds drifting past your balcony.

In Monteverde you can:

  • Join an iconic canopy tour, ziplining from platform to platform through the forest, including one of the longest ziplines in Latin America. This is a major highlight of many Costa Rica family holidays with teenagers.
  • Take a guided nature walk through the cloud forest, where orchids, ferns and epiphytes cling to every surface.
  • Enjoy a coffee and chocolate tour, learning how these crops shaped Costa Rica’s history and tasting each stage of production, plus an introduction to traditional sugar cane processing.

Evenings are cosy and atmospheric, often with hearty local food and time to sit out listening to the forest.

Cloud Forest, Costa Rica

Days 9–13: Nosara, Nicoya Peninsula – Surf, Yoga & Sea Turtles

From the mountains you descend to the Nicoya Peninsula and the laidback beach town of Nosara, renowned for yoga, surfing and spectacular sunsets.

This stretch of the itinerary brings a welcome change of pace:

  • Wide, sandy Pacific beaches with consistent surf breaks.
  • A relaxed, bohemian atmosphere with small cafés, surf shops and yoga studios.
  • The chance to swim, surf, walk and simply enjoy the ocean.

A standout element here is an authentic community experience in the village of Santa Bárbara in Santa Cruz:

  • Visiting a traditional “casona” house that now serves as a small museum.
  • Watching artisans create Guaitil ceramics using techniques passed down from the Chorotega people.
  • Joining a handson cooking class to prepare regional dishes with a local cook.
  • Learning about the marimba and traditional music.

Depending on the time of year, there may also be an opportunity to visit Ostional, where thousands of olive ridley, green and leatherback turtles come ashore to nest between July and February, under carefully managed protection.

Most days in Nosara are free for you to design: surf lessons, daily yoga, beach walks or simple hammock time. This flexibility makes it ideal for couples, solos and families.

Surfing in Costa Rica

Day 14: Coffee Farm Stay Near San José

Rather than going straight to the airport, this Costa Rica 2week itinerary finishes with a night on an organic coffee farm in the Central Valley.

Here you stay in a charming boutique inn on a working plantation, with beautiful views and strong ecocredentials. It is the perfect soft landing at the end of your trip: time for one last freshly brewed cup of coffee at source and a final sunset over the hills.

Beach in Costa Rica

Day 15: Departure

After breakfast you have a private transfer to the airport for your flight home, with cameras full of photos and heads full of pura vida.

Is Costa Rica Good Value For Money?

Costa Rica is not the cheapest destination in Central America, especially at Christmas and New Year, but my clients felt that this wellplanned Costa Rica adventure holiday with so much included offered excellent value:

  • Highquality experiences: Smallgroup wildlife tours, expert guides and protected natural environments.
  • Characterful accommodation: Boutique hotels, ecolodges and familyrun inns rather than anonymous large resorts.
  • Efficient routing: Smart planning minimises long travel days and internal flights, so you maximise your time on the ground.
  • Memorable days: Almost every day includes a standout experience, from turtle spotting to ziplining or coffee farm visits.

A tailormade approach also means your itinerary can be adjusted to match your budget, preferred travel style and how active or relaxed you want your holiday to feel.
