Norwegian Epic

Norwegian Epic Review: A Big, Lively Ship With Plenty of Personality

Jay Hollingsworth on 16 Jun 2026

Thinking about sailing on Norwegian Epic? Here’s my honest review of the ship, including the cabins, dining, entertainment, atmosphere, standout features and a few things to be aware of before you book.

Norwegian Epic is one of those ships that people tend to remember.

She is big, lively, a little bit quirky, and packed with things to do. For some guests, that is exactly what makes her such a fun choice. For others, especially those who prefer a quieter or more traditional style of cruise, she may feel a little too busy.

I sailed on Norwegian Epic in August 2021, and I still think she is a ship that needs to be matched carefully to the right client. She has a lot going for her, but she also has a few design choices that are worth understanding before you book.

That is why I always think it is important to look beyond the itinerary and the price. The ship itself plays a big part in your holiday, and Norwegian Epic definitely has its own personality.

Norwegian Epic Overview

What I loved onboard

One of the things I liked most about Norwegian Epic was the variety.

This is not a ship where you feel short of options. There are casual places to eat, speciality restaurants, live music venues, bars, adult-only spaces, family-friendly areas, a spa, waterslides and lots of evening entertainment.

The Epic Plunge waterslide was great fun and gave the pool deck that big-ship holiday feel. The Ice Bar was another memorable feature. It is a bit of a novelty, but it is something different and makes for a fun experience onboard.

I also really liked Spice H2O. It is an adult-focused space at the back of the ship and has a more relaxed feel during the day, though it can become livelier later. It is a good option if you want to step away from the main pool deck for a while.

Norwegian Epic also has Vibe Beach Club, which is worth knowing about if you like the idea of a quieter adults-only retreat with loungers, ocean views and a more exclusive feel. It usually comes at an additional cost, and availability can be limited, so it is something I would look at early if that kind of space matters to you.

Norwegian Epic - Dining Overview

Dining onboard Norwegian Epic

Dining was one of the highlights of my cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for a more flexible style of dining, so you are not tied to the same table and time every evening. I think that works especially well on busy itineraries, where you might be getting back from a long day ashore and want to eat when it suits you.

I tried Teppanyaki and Cagney’s Steakhouse, and both were excellent.

Teppanyaki was brilliant because it was not just about the food. It was fun, lively and felt like a proper night out. Cagney’s was a more classic steakhouse experience and felt like a nice treat.

I also used O’Sheehan’s (the Irish pub) quite a lot. It is casual, centrally-located and handy if you want something simple rather than a full restaurant meal. It is also a good option for a relaxed lunch or a later snack.

My advice with Norwegian Epic would be to make use of the variety. Do not rely on one dining venue every night. Mix the included restaurants with a couple of speciality options if your budget allows, and you are likely to get a much better overall experience.

Norwegian Epic Balcony Stateroom

Cabins on Norwegian Epic

The cabins are probably the biggest thing to understand before booking Norwegian Epic.

They are different.

In many balcony cabins, the shower and toilet are separate, with the sink positioned within the main cabin area. There is a curtain for privacy, but it is still an unusual setup compared with most cruise cabins.

For some couples, this will be absolutely fine. For others, especially friends sharing, families with older children, or anyone who prefers a more traditional bathroom layout, it could feel awkward.

I stayed in a balcony cabin and found it comfortable once I got used to it, but I would always explain the layout clearly before recommending the ship. It is not something I would want a client discovering for the first time when they walk into their cabin.

The cabins are perfectly workable, but they are not the most conventional at sea. This is one of those details where proper advice really does matter.

Norwegian Epic Entertainment

Entertainment and nightlife

Entertainment is one of Norwegian Epic’s stronger points.

When I sailed, Burn the Floor was a real standout. It was energetic, slick, and felt like a proper theatre-style production.

I also loved Howl at the Moon, which is a duelling piano show where the musicians take requests, and the atmosphere builds as the evening goes on. It is relaxed, lively and great fun if you enjoy music and a bit of audience interaction.

The Cavern Club was another of my favourites. It is a great spot for live music after dinner, with a Beatles-inspired feel that gives it a bit of character.

This is where Epic really suits people who enjoy having something to do in the evening. If your ideal cruise night is dinner, a show, a drink, some music and a bit of atmosphere, it offers plenty.

Norwegian Epic

Outdoor spaces and activities

Norwegian Epic has a good range of outdoor spaces, but it can feel busy, especially on sea days.

The main pool deck has a lot going on, with the Aqua Park, waterslides and plenty of activity. Families and guests who like a lively pool atmosphere will probably enjoy it, but if you are looking for quiet relaxation, you may prefer to seek out Spice H2O, Vibe Beach Club, the spa, or your own balcony.

There is also a climbing wall and other active features onboard, so she works well for guests who like a ship with plenty to dip in and out of.

The key thing to remember is that Epic is a large, lively ship. She is not designed to feel calm and spacious everywhere. She is much better suited to guests who enjoy choice, atmosphere and a bit of buzz.

Norwegian Epic Solo Stateroom

Epic for solo travellers

One feature I think deserves more attention is Norwegian Epic’s Studio cabins.

These were designed with solo travellers in mind, giving guests travelling alone the option of having their own cabin without paying for a standard double-occupancy cabin.

There is also a Studio Lounge, which can make it easier to meet other solo travellers if you want a more social experience.

For the right solo traveller, Epic can work really well. There is plenty to do in the evenings, lots of dining choices, and enough going on around the ship that you do not feel as though everything is geared only towards couples or families.

Things to be aware of before booking

Norwegian Epic is not a ship I would recommend blindly to everyone.

The cabin layout is the first thing to understand. It is unusual, and while some guests are completely fine with it, others may not love it.

The ship can also feel busy, particularly around popular dining times, the buffet, embarkation, disembarkation and sea days. That is not unusual for a large ship, but it is something to bear in mind if you prefer a quieter, more spacious atmosphere.

It is also not one of Norwegian’s newest ships, so if you are comparing it to newer ships in the fleet, you may notice differences in design and overall feel.

None of that means she should be ruled out. It just means she needs to be chosen for the right reasons.

Who Norwegian Epic is best suited to

I would recommend Norwegian Epic for clients who like a lively ship with lots of choice.

It can work well for couples, groups of friends, families with older children, solo travellers, and anyone who wants a casual, flexible cruise experience with plenty to do.

It is especially worth considering on a port-heavy itinerary, where the destination is a big part of the holiday, and the ship offers plenty of dining, entertainment, and relaxation options around it.

I would be more cautious for clients who want quiet luxury, a very traditional cruise feel, lots of peaceful public areas, or a more elegant and understated atmosphere.

Gavin & I onboard Norwegian Epic

My honest verdict

Norwegian Epic is a big, lively ship with plenty of personality.

It has great dining options, strong entertainment, fun features, good nightlife and some really useful choices for solo travellers. It also has a few quirks, especially in cabin design and the ship's overall layout.

For the right person, it can be a brilliant choice. For the wrong person, it could feel too busy or too unusual.

And that is where good advice makes a difference. Choosing a cruise is not just about finding the cheapest price or the best looking itinerary. It is about matching the ship, cabin, destination and overall style of holiday to the way you actually like to travel.

Thinking about setting sail onboard Norwegian Epic?

If you are considering Norwegian Epic, or any Norwegian Cruise Line sailing, I can help you work out whether it is the right fit for you.

Sometimes the best cruise is not the newest ship or the one with the biggest list of features. It is the one that feels right for the kind of holiday you want.
