Banff: A Place of Mountains, Memories and Magic
Before I became a Travel Counsellor, I had the privilege of working for the Fairmont Hotel Group. One of the most memorable chapters of that time was working at the incredible Fairmont Banff Springs in Alberta, Canada. Set amongst the breathtaking Canadian Rockies. Here's what I love about this part of the world.
Cascade Mountain from Banff Avenue 🏔️
One of my favourite memories is perhaps one of the simplest — seeing Cascade Mountain from Banff Avenue. You could be walking through town, and there it was: a magnificent mountain rising behind the buildings. What I particularly loved was how the colour of the mountain seemed to change throughout the day. Depending on the light, it could take on a beautiful pinkish glow, while at other times it appeared snow covered. It was as though the mountain had its own ever-changing personality. I loved that about Banff. The scenery wasn't confined to a particular viewpoint or excursion. The mountains were simply part of everyday life. It made even an ordinary walk feel rather extraordinary.
Wildlife Around Banff 🦌🐺🐻
One of the things that makes the Canadian Rockies so special is the incredible wildlife. I have fond memories of seeing elk simply wandering down Banff Avenue. It was such a wonderful sight and a reminder that, in Banff, nature really is part of everyday life. You could be going about your day in town and suddenly find yourself sharing the street with one of these magnificent animals. It's not just elk that make the area so special. Wolves and bears are also part of the remarkable wildlife found in the Canadian Rockies, adding to that sense of wilderness and adventure. For me, that's a huge part of Banff's appeal. It's not just the spectacular mountains and scenery — it's the feeling of being somewhere where wildlife and nature are woven into the experience, making even the simplest moments memorable.
Seeing Banff from the Gondola (Sulphur Mountain)🚡
Another memorable experience was taking a trip on the Banff Gondola. The views as you ascend are spectacular, with the town of Banff, the surrounding mountains and the Bow Valley stretching out below. Reaching the top and taking in that panoramic scenery is something I can still picture.There is something rather magical about seeing a destination from above, and the gondola offers a completely different perspective of the landscape that surrounds Banff.
Exploring Johnston Canyon 🌲
One of the trips I remember fondly was visiting Johnston Canyon, a beautiful natural attraction just outside Banff.Walking through the canyon, surrounded by towering rock walls, forest and the sound of rushing water, was such a lovely experience. The pathways lead you through the landscape, with waterfalls and incredible scenery along the way. It's one of those places that reminds you how special the Canadian Rockies are. You don't necessarily need to be doing something adventurous to appreciate the beauty — sometimes, simply walking amongst it is enough.
Skiing and Winter Adventures 🎿❄️
Banff is also a dream destination for anyone who loves skiing and winter sports.When the snow arrives, the Canadian Rockies take on a whole new character. The mountains become a winter playground, with opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and other snowy adventures.The surrounding ski areas, including Banff Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt Norquay, offer spectacular mountain settings for winter sports enthusiasts, whether you're an experienced skier or looking to enjoy the magic of the snow at a gentler pace. Even if skiing isn't your thing, there's something wonderfully special about Banff in winter — crisp mountain air, snow-covered landscapes and the chance to experience the Rockies in a completely different season. It's another reason why Banff is such a versatile destination. Whether you visit in summer or winter, the scenery and experiences are unforgettable.
🏔️A Little Relaxation at Willow Stream Spa ✨
Working at the Fairmont Banff Springs also meant being familiar with the hotel's wonderful Willow Stream Spa. After exploring the surrounding area, the idea of unwinding in a beautiful spa setting was rather appealing. Willow Stream Spa offered that opportunity to slow down, relax and enjoy a little indulgence amidst the spectacular surroundings. It's a lovely reminder that Banff isn't just about adventure and sightseeing. It can also be about rest, relaxation and enjoying the finer things in life.
Why Banff Still Means So Much to Me ❤️
Looking back, I feel very fortunate to have spent time in Banff. From the dramatic mountain scenery and encounters with wildlife to the little everyday moments, it was a place that offered something special at every turn. And having worked at the Fairmont Banff Springs, I have a personal connection to the destination that makes it particularly meaningful to me.Today, as a Travel Counsellor, I love being able to draw on those experiences when helping clients plan their own holidays. Whether you're dreaming of exploring the Rockies, taking in the views from the gondola, enjoying the great outdoors or simply escaping somewhere beautiful, Banff is a destination that deserves a place on your wish list. Some destinations you visit..... Others stay with you..... Banff is definitely one of those places for me.
