Northern Lights Cruises: When Should You Book for 2027 and 2028?
Seeing the Northern Lights is one of those truly magical travel experiences that sits firmly on many people's bucket lists.
Whether you're watching the sky dance with shades of green from the deck of a cruise ship or standing on a snowy Norwegian shoreline, it's an experience that stays with you forever. One question I am being asked more and more is: "When should I book a Northern Lights cruise for 2027 or 2028?" The simple answer is: sooner rather than later.
Northern Lights cruises are becoming increasingly popular, particularly from UK departure ports, and many 2027 sailings are already on sale with some 2028 itineraries beginning to appear. Popular departure dates, cabin grades and solo cabins often sell first.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights season in Norway generally runs from late September through to early April, when the nights are dark enough to make sightings possible. The further north you travel, the better your chances.
While the lights can never be guaranteed, many experts consider October to March to be the prime viewing period. Interestingly, scientific data suggests that aurora activity can be particularly strong around the spring and autumn equinoxes, making September, October, March and early April excellent choices.
Why choose a cruise?
One of the biggest advantages of a cruise is flexibility. Unlike staying in one location, a ship can move to areas with clearer skies, helping maximise your chances of seeing the aurora.
Many Northern Lights itineraries also visit destinations such as Tromsø, Alta, Narvik and the Lofoten Islands, allowing you to combine your search for the aurora with husky sledding, snowmobiling, Sami cultural experiences and spectacular Arctic scenery.

Should you book now for 2027 and 2028?
Absolutely.
Cruise lines including Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Hurtigruten and others have seen strong demand for Northern Lights itineraries in recent years. Booking early often provides the widest choice of cabins, the best prices and more flexibility when selecting departure dates.
There is also growing interest from travellers hoping to experience the aurora while solar activity remains relatively strong during the current solar cycle, making the next couple of years particularly appealing.
My Top Tip
Don't focus solely on the Northern Lights.
The aurora is a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed, no matter when you travel. Instead, choose an itinerary packed with experiences you'll love regardless. Think dramatic Norwegian fjords, Arctic wildlife, cosy winter towns, husky safaris and some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. If the Northern Lights appear, it's the icing on the cake.
After working in travel for over 20 years, I've found that the happiest clients are the ones who fall in love with the whole journey, not just one moment.
If Northern Lights cruising is on your wish list for 2027 or 2028, now is an excellent time to start planning.
