Stepping aboard Allure of the Seas: Our Mediterranean Family Adventure

Joanne Harrison on 24 Aug 2025

In August 2025, my family and I boarded Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas in Barcelona for a 7 night cruise that gave us sunshine, sea days, incredible shows and a very special milestone: our 20th wedding anniversary. It was one of those trips that manages to feel both exciting and deeply relaxing at the same time, and one we’ll be talking about for years.

First Impressions: A Floating City

Nothing quite prepares you for the scale of Allure of the Seas. Walking up to the ship in Barcelona, it felt like a gleaming floating city: multiple decks stacked high, balconies everywhere, and that buzz of anticipation from everyone embarking together. Once on board, we quickly realised just how much there is to do. From the pools and activity areas to the variety of bars and restaurants, it really did feel like there was something around every corner. Even after a week, we were still discovering new spaces.

Our Home at Sea: Inside Cabin Comfort

We opted for inside cabins, and they were absolutely perfect for our 7‑night sailing.

The cabins were:

  • Comfortable and well thought‑out
  • With clever storage so we could unpack properly
  • Cosy, calm spaces to retreat to after busy days in port or evenings out enjoying the entertainment

Despite being inside cabins with no window, they never felt cramped. Because we spent so much time out and about around the ship, they became exactly what we needed them to be: a comfortable base to sleep, refresh and get ready for the next adventure.

Life On Board: So Much To Do

One of the joys of Allure of the Seas is the sheer choice of things to do throughout the day. Whether it was:

  • Relaxing by the pool
  • Wandering the different neighbourhoods on board
  • Joining in with family activities
  • Or simply people‑watching with a coffee

We never once heard “I’m bored”. The ship’s layout made it easy for everyone to find their own favourite spots, and there was a real sense of energy wherever we went.

Evenings At Sea: The Schooner Bar Tradition

Very quickly, we fell into a lovely evening routine. Our favourite spot on the ship became the Schooner Bar.

Each night, before dinner, we would head there for a drink and to simply sit and watch the world go by. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed: exactly what you want at the end of a busy day ashore. It became our little tradition: meet at the Schooner Bar, chat about the day, plan the next one and enjoy that gentle buzz of holiday contentment.

Show Time: West End Quality At Sea

The onboard entertainment really was a highlight of our cruise. Allure of the Seas offers a variety of big‑production shows, and we made the most of it.

We were blown away by:

  • Mamma Mia in the theatre: a full‑scale musical at sea with fantastic vocals and staging. It felt like being transported straight into the West End, but with the added bonus of being able to stroll back to our cabin afterwards.
  • The Aqua Show: this was truly jaw‑dropping. Performed in the open‑air AquaTheater at the back of the ship, with high dives, acrobatics and synchronised swimming, all with the ocean as the backdrop. It was unlike anything we’d seen before.
  • The Ice Show: another standout, showing just how versatile the ship is. Watching professional skaters perform such intricate routines on a rink in the middle of a cruise ship was amazing.

Every night felt like a proper night out, with world‑class entertainment just a few steps away.

A Taste of the Med: Fabulous Food

Food is such a big part of any cruise, and this one did not disappoint. From breakfast through to late‑night snacks, we were very well looked after.

We enjoyed:

  • Varied menus in the main dining room
  • Lots of choice for even the fussiest eaters
  • Quality dishes that made dinners feel like an occasion

There was always something new to try, but also comforting favourites if you wanted something simple. Combined with the relaxed pre‑dinner drink in the Schooner Bar, our evenings felt wonderfully indulgent without ever being stuffy.

Ports Of Call: A Mediterranean Highlights Reel

Our itinerary from Barcelona gave us a brilliant snapshot of the Western Mediterranean, with a mix of culture, history and classic holiday atmosphere.

Palma
Palma offered that perfect blend of beachy relaxation and historic charm. Think palm‑lined streets, a beautiful cathedral and plenty of cafés for an ice‑cream or a cool drink in the sun.

Naples
Naples was our gateway to some of Italy’s most iconic sights. Whether you stay in the city to soak up the energy and grab a slice of authentic pizza or head out on an excursion, it is a bustling, atmospheric stop full of character.

Civitavecchia
From Civitavecchia, many people head into Rome. It is a full day, but for those who choose it there is nothing quite like catching your first glimpse of the Colosseum or the Trevi Fountain. Even if you stay closer to port, it is a chance to enjoy a slice of Italian coastal life.

Pisa
Pisa was particularly special for us, as it is where we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. Standing by the Leaning Tower, taking those classic photos and simply soaking up the moment felt very emotional and memorable. Marking such an important milestone somewhere so iconic made the day feel truly unique.

A Special Anniversary At Sea

Celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary during the cruise added an extra layer of magic to the trip. We had:

  • A wonderful day in Pisa, making new memories around such a famous landmark
  • The chance to return to the ship for a relaxed evening of great food, drinks and entertainment

It felt like the perfect way to toast two decades together: a mix of romance, family time and adventure.

Looking Back: Why This Cruise Worked So Well For Our Family

Reflecting on our 7‑night sailing on Allure of the Seas, a few things stand out:

  • Comfortable inside cabins that worked perfectly for a week, giving us a cost‑effective yet comfortable base.
  • A big, activity‑packed ship that kept every member of the family happy, with plenty of variety day and night.
  • Brilliant evening entertainment, from Mamma Mia to the Aqua Show and ice skating, all included.
  • Relaxed, sociable atmosphere in places like the Schooner Bar, where we could unwind together before dinner.
  • Memorable ports of call, giving us a taste of Spain and Italy in one seamless itinerary.
  • A milestone anniversary celebrated in style, with Pisa as our backdrop and the ship as our floating home.

It was exactly what we hoped for: a holiday where everything was taken care of, we could explore multiple destinations without packing and unpacking, and we had quality family time layered with little moments of luxury.
