Bucket List Moments That Stay With You Forever

Julia O'Connor on 22 May 2026

What makes a true “bucket list” experience for you? Is it ticking off a famous landmark, or is it that one moment when you pause, look around and think: I will remember this for the rest of my life?

For me, the very best bucket list trips are not just about places, they are about people, stories and those small, unscripted memories that become part of your family’s legend. Here are a few of my own that might just inspire your next big adventure.

Safari Dreams: Wildlife, Wilderness & BigSky Magic

For many people, a safari sits right at the top of the bucket list. And with good reason. The first time you lock eyes with a wild animal from the back of a jeep, there is usually a hushed silence, followed by a very quiet, “Wow.”

Safari is not just about ticking off the Big Five, it is about a whole tapestry of unforgettable moments:

  • Watching elephants wander past at sunset, dust turning golden in the light
  • Hearing lions roar in the distance as you sit around a campfire
  • Seeing giraffes silhouetted against a burning orange sky
  • Spotting tiny details: a chameleon in a bush, the flick of a cheetah’s tail, the tracks of a rhino in the sand

And then there is the wilderness from the air. Taking a small plane flight or hot air balloon over vast savannahs, meandering rivers or the patchwork of a delta is an experience in itself: you see how incredibly wide and wild these landscapes really are. Looking down on herds of animals from above is both humbling and utterly thrilling.

A wellplanned safari balances excitement with comfort: beautiful lodges, incredible food, earlymorning game drives and lazy afternoons by the pool. It is the sort of trip that changes how you see the natural world forever.

Reunions, Dumplings & Dynasties: A MultiCity Adventure in China

Have you ever thought about combining visiting friends or family overseas with a proper, onceinalifetime journey? That is exactly what we did with a multicity stay in China, weaving time with loved ones into a trip through Shanghai and Beijing.

In Shanghai, we soaked up the futuristic skyline and buzzing city streets, sampling incredible food. Then we headed to Beijing, where history suddenly feels very real. We walked along the simply breathtaking Great Wall of China, tracing the stones under our feet and imagining the centuries of footsteps before us. All the time marvelling at quite how it was built? Later, we wandered through the Forbidden City, exploring  its vast courtyards, painted roofs and sense of quiet power.

It was the perfect balance: the warmth of connection, plus the thrill of standing in places you have seen in books and films your whole life. That combination is what turns a good city break into a true bucket list journey.

“I Can See Fish!”: Underwater Magic in Australia

Do you ever have a memory that makes you smile the moment it pops into your head? One of mine is from Rottnest Island in Australia. We were swimming off the beach, the water that impossible shade of turquoise, when my son clung to my husband’s back with his snorkel on and suddenly started screaming, “I can see fish!” at the top of his lungs.

He was absolutely beside himself with excitement, pointing out every flash of colour as schools of tropical fish darted beneath them. It was such a simple moment: no luxury overwater villas or private yachts, just warm water, colourful fish and the pure joy of seeing an underwater world for the first time.

That is the thing about bucket list experiences with children: they are often made in these tiny, unscripted pockets of time. You can plan the destination, but the magic often arrives in the inbetween moments.

Opera Houses, Northern Lights & Father Christmas

And then there are the icons. You know the ones: the landmarks you have seen in a thousand photographs, but when you finally stand in front of them, they still take your breath away.

In Sydney, that moment came as we rounded the harbour and saw the Opera House in real life, its white sails gleaming against the blue sky, framed by the water and the curve of the Harbour Bridge. It is one of those views that instantly says, “Yes, you are really here.”

At the opposite end of the scale is another kind of icon: the first time you see the Northern Lights dance across a dark winter sky, or watch your child step into Father Christmas’s snowy world in the Arctic. Standing together in the crisp night air, wrapped up warm, eyes turned to the heavens as ribbons of green and purple light ripple overhead, is the sort of quiet, awefilled moment that stays with you long after the photos fade. Pair that with the sheer joy of meeting Father Christmas in his real home and you have a family memory you will talk about for decades.

Geysers & Hot Springs: The Earth Coming to Life

If you are drawn to the raw power of nature, imagine marvelling at geysers and hot springs in places like Iceland or New Zealand: steam rising into the cold air, pools glowing turquoise and milky blue, the earth literally bubbling beneath your feet. It feels otherworldly, as if you have stepped onto another planet, and yet you are right there, hand in hand with the people you love.

These are the places where children suddenly realise that geography is not just something in a textbook, and adults fall a little bit in love with the planet all over again.

What Is On Your Bucket List?

Maybe your dream is to walk the Great Wall, to explore ancient palaces, to swim with tropical fish, to chase the Northern Lights, to soak in hot springs, or to watch elephants roaming free from both jeep and air. Maybe it is simply to visit friends and family you have not seen for far too long and turn that visit into a truly unforgettable adventure.

Whatever is on your list, I would love to help you bring it to life, with the benefit of reallife experience, honest advice and thoughtful planning.
