Travelling That Feels Good: Holidays With Heart, Purpose And A Lighter Footprint

Julia O'Connor on 22 May 2026

Have you ever come home from a holiday thinking, “That was amazing… but I wish it had meant something more?” Maybe you are starting to ask yourself: Can I travel in a way that feels good for me, and good for the places and people I visit too?

The lovely thing is: yes, you absolutely can. With a bit of thought and the right guidance, your holiday can boost your wellbeing and give back to people and planet.

What Does “Responsible Travel” Actually Look Like For You?

You might be wondering: “Do I have to stay in a treehouse with no electricity and eat lentils for a week?” Absolutely not. Responsible, sustainable travel can be very comfortable, very beautiful and very luxurious.

With Travel Counsellors, I often look at Green Leafendorsed hotels and partners with strong sustainability initiatives. For you, that can mean:

  • Properties that reduce waste and energy use without you lifting a finger.
  • Hotels that support local staff, artisans and suppliers rather than flying everything in.
  • Experiences that are carefully designed to protect wildlife and culture rather than exploit it.
  • You still get the gorgeous room, the pool, the spa, the sunsets… but you also know your money is doing something positive in the background.

Can You Really Make A Difference With Just One Suitcase?

One of my favourite examples is the Pack for a Purpose initiative. You choose a project supported by your accommodation, pop some specific items into your luggage, and deliver them when you arrive.

When we travelled to South Africa as a family, we took footballs and kit out to a local school. Watching my children play a game with the schoolchildren, all laughing together over slightly chaotic tackles and impressive goal celebrations, was one of those “this is why we travel” moments. For you, it might be pencils and books for a village school, medical supplies for a clinic, or sports equipment for a youth project. Small effort, big impact.

What About Wildlife And Conservation?

If you are an animal lover, you might already be asking: “How do I make sure my safari or wildlife trip genuinely helps, not harms?”

In Namibia, we joined a leopard tracking project and visited a conservation initiative working to protect vulnerable species. It was both humbling and inspiring to see how carefully managed tourism supports research and safeguards habitats. In South Africa, we visited a community garden that supplies fresh produce to nearby lodges, giving income and skills to local people and reducing food miles at the same time.

Across Africa and beyond, there are so many ways you can quietly contribute:

  • Responsible rhino tracking projects that help to fund antipoaching work.
  • Turtle conservation programmes that protect nesting sites.
  • Marine projects that restore coral reefs and reduce plastic in the oceans.

You still get the magic: the sunrise game drive, the turtle hatchlings, the snorkelling over coral. But you also know your presence is helping these places and creatures be there for future generations, including your own children and grandchildren.

So, Where Do You Start?

You do not have to research every project or read every policy. That is where I come in. Tell me what matters to you:

  • Do you want your children to meet local communities?
  • Are you passionate about wildlife?
  • Do you love the idea of a wellness break that also supports the environment?

I will guide you towards Green Leafendorsed hotels, responsible experiences and meaningful give back opportunities that fit naturally into your holiday rather than feeling like homework.

If you are ready for your next trip to feel good in every way, I would love to help.
