A Peaceful Italian Escape: Discovering Franciacorta & the Quiet Beauty of Lake Iseo
L'Albereta: Relais & Chateaux
As a Travel Counsellor, I’m often asked where to go in Italy that still feels authentic - somewhere beautiful but without the crowds. Last year, to celebrate my 40th birthday, my husband and I found exactly that on a very rare trip abroad - just the two of us
Tucked away in northern Italy, in a region called Franciacorta (about an hour’s drive east of Milan and just south of Lake Iseo), we discovered a hidden gem: L’Albereta, a Relais & Chateaux property. And all I can say is...wow - now this is what a peaceful escape feels like.
Franciacorta itself is not a place most travellers would immediately recognise, which is part of its charm. It's full of rolling vineyards, views for days and a slower, more intentional pace of life. It’s often compared to Tuscany, but without the crowds - and with a quietly confident edge of its own.
From the moment we arrived at L’Albereta, the tone for the trip was set. The hotel is set into the hillside, surrounded by immaculate gardens that felt almost like a fairytale. There’s a stillness there that’s hard to describe - where you notice the birds singing, the rustle of leaves, and the simple pleasure of doing absolutely nothing...and that’s exactly what we did.
The service was exceptional but never overbearing. Everything just felt heartfelt, from the warm welcome to the gentle attention to detail throughout our stay. We felt thoroughly well looked after.
Wanting to explore a little further afield, we rented a car - something I always recommend when staying in lesser-known regions like this. Having that freedom allowed us to experience the area at our own pace, without being tied to schedules or crowds.
Just a short drive away is Lake Iseo, one of Italy’s most underrated lakes. Smaller and quieter than Como or Garda, it offers a more authentic glimpse into Italian life.
We spent our days wandering around the different lakeside towns, stopping for long, leisurely lunches, and embracing what the Italians call la dolce fa niente - the sweetness of doing nothing.
One of the highlights was taking a boat across the lake to Monte Isola, a tiny island across the water with no cars. Locals get around by bike, scooter, or simply on foot. The absence of traffic changes the atmosphere completely - everything feels slower, softer, more connected.
We spent hours just walking - no agenda, no rush - passing quiet harbours, small cafés, and glimpses of everyday life. It was simple, and yet exactly what we wanted.
Each afternoon, we’d return to the hotel, ready to come back to the calm. Without fail, we’d settle in with a mocktail in front of the open fire - a simple and comforting ritual that quickly became one of my favourite parts of the trip.
That’s the beauty of travelling off the beaten track. It’s not about ticking off landmarks or chasing the “must-sees.” It’s about finding places that give you space - to breathe, to reconnect, and to experience a destination in a more meaningful way.
For me, this trip was more than just a holiday - it was a chance to pause, to celebrate a milestone, and to spend uninterrupted time together in a setting that allowed us to truly switch off.
If you’re looking for a different side of Italy - one that feels calm, authentic, and quietly luxurious - Franciacorta and Lake Iseo might just be your perfect escape.
And sometimes, knowing where not everyone else is going makes all the difference.
