Cyprus: Sun‑drenched days, mountain air and timeless history
I have recently returned from my first visit to Cyprus, spending a wonderful week in Paphos. If you’re dreaming of a break that offers sunshine, character and the chance to do as much or as little as you like, Cyprus is a beautiful choice. Here’s my experience.
Poolside calm & seaโview strolls in Paphos
Most days began slowly, exactly how holidays should. I loved
simply relaxing by the pool, soaking up that dependable Cypriot sunshine and
easing into the day with a book in hand. When I got too hot, I would cool off with
a refreshing swim.
When I did venture out, one of my favourite simple pleasures was walking along the Paphos promenade. The path hugs the coastline, with the sea shimmering beside you and the sound of the waves as a constant soundtrack. Cafรฉs and tavernas line the way especially near the harbour, perfect for a coffee stop or a glass of something chilled as you watch the boats and peopleโwatch to your heartโs content.
A taste of Cyprus: local food & wine
Food was a real highlight of the week. I made it my mission
to try as many local dishes as possible, and Cyprus did not disappoint. Think
fresh salads bursting with ripe tomatoes and olives, grilled halloumi that
squeaks softly as you bite into it, slowโcooked meats and fragrant stews,
all brought to the table in generous portions.
Meals were often accompanied by lovely local wine, and there is something particularly special about sipping a glass of Cypriot red, white or rose while dining al fresco on a warm evening.
Stepping back in time: Paphos UNESCO world heritage site
One of the most fascinating parts of my stay was visiting
the Nea Pafos Archaeological Site, only a 15-minute walk from my hotel. Here,
history really comes alive. Wandering among the ancient remains and beautifully
preserved mosaics, it is incredible to think how many centuries of stories are
layered beneath your feet.
The intricate floor mosaics, with their mythological scenes and rich colours, are a real highlight and give a glimpse into the lives and imaginations of those who lived here long before us. It felt like I almost had the place to myself as I went early in the morning which made for a lovely, relaxing experience.
A breath of fresh air: day trip to the Troodos Mountains
To balance the coast, I took a day trip into the Troodos
Mountains, and it felt like stepping into a completely different side of
Cyprus. The air is cooler and crisper, with pine forests, traditional villages
and winding roads that reveal sweeping views at every turn.
It was a lovely contrast to the seaside, and a reminder of just how diverse and rural the island is. You can be dipping your toes in the Mediterranean in the morning and breathing in mountain air by the afternoon. For anyone who enjoys walking, nature or simply a change of scene, Troodos is a must.
Crossing the island: a visit to Nicosia
Another memorable part of my trip was heading to Nicosia,
the islandโs capital, to meet an old friend who I had not seen for 16 years.
The city has a completely different feel to the resorts: more urban, layered
and thoughtโprovoking, with its mix of old and new and because it is
โsplitโ between the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus in the north.
Catching up with someone who knows the city well made it even more special. Together we explored, chatted over drinks and lunch and soaked up the atmosphere. It was a reminder that travel is not just about places, but about people and the connections we make or rekindle along the way.
Why Cyprus works so well for a week away
