A Summer Adventure in Svalbard

There are some destinations that exceed every expectation, and for me, Svalbard was one of them.

I'd always imagined the Arctic as a place of snow, darkness and extreme conditions, but visiting in the summer completely changed my perspective. Instead, I discovered dramatic mountains, vast glaciers, incredible wildlife and the magical phenomenon of the Midnight Sun, where daylight stretches around the clock.

It quickly became one of the most unique places I've ever visited, and I know it's a destination I'll be recommending to clients for years to come.

Checking In at Funken Lodge

My home for the trip was Funken Lodge, perched above Longyearbyen with spectacular views across Adventfjorden.

From the moment I arrived, I understood why it's considered one of Svalbard's finest hotels. The lodge effortlessly combines Scandinavian elegance with warm hospitality, creating a luxurious retreat in one of the world's most remote locations.

After a day of exploring, returning to beautifully designed interiors, cosy lounges and exceptional food felt like the perfect way to unwind. One of my favourite moments was simply sitting with a drink and taking in the incredible Arctic scenery from the hotel.

Luxury in Svalbard isn't about extravagance—it's about comfort, exceptional service and being immersed in one of the most extraordinary landscapes on Earth.

The Magic of the Midnight Sun

One of the highlights of visiting in summer was experiencing the Midnight Sun.

It feels wonderfully surreal to head out for an evening walk at 10pm with the sun still high in the sky, or to enjoy dinner knowing it will never get dark. The golden Arctic light gives the landscape an almost dreamlike quality, making every photograph look as though it's been taken during the perfect golden hour.

The endless daylight also means you can fit so much into each day without ever feeling rushed.

Wildlife Like Nowhere Else

One of the reasons I wanted to visit Svalbard was for its wildlife, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Our boat excursions took us through breathtaking fjords surrounded by towering glaciers, where we spotted whales and an incredible variety of Arctic birdlife. Seeing these animals thriving in such an untouched environment was a real privilege.

Although polar bears are undoubtedly Svalbard's most famous residents, they're wild animals living freely across the archipelago. Sightings are never guaranteed, which makes the destination feel all the more authentic and respectful of nature. I shall hopefully be back to find this elusive animal!

Exploring the Arctic

Every day brought a new adventure.

Whether cruising alongside glaciers, learning about Svalbard's fascinating history or simply walking through Longyearbyen, I was constantly amazed by the raw beauty of the landscape.

There's a peacefulness here that's difficult to describe. With vast open spaces, crisp Arctic air and very few people, it's the perfect destination for anyone wanting to truly disconnect from everyday life.

Dining Above the Arctic Circle

I was pleasantly surprised by Svalbard's food scene.

At Funken Lodge, the dining experience was exceptional, with beautifully presented dishes showcasing fresh seafood and local Arctic ingredients. It was the perfect blend of fine dining and relaxed Scandinavian hospitality.

Even in such a remote destination, the quality of food and service was outstanding.

Why I'd Recommend Svalbard
