How I spent a week on the Costa Brava Coast ✨
My summer trip this year was a week in Spain, to a part of Costa Brava which I know well. This time though was extra special, as it was my first time there with my son and I loved seeing all our favourite places through his eyes.
Friday - We began our trip with a visit to Llafranc - a pretty little cove with a relaxed atmosphere and many charming restaurants. My favourite has to be Nova Pasta - where the patatas bravas are too good. After lunch we wandered around the marina, before heading to the villa which would be our base for the week.
Our villa was in a small, peaceful village called Regencos. It felt nicely tucked away, yet still close to lots of places to explore.
There are a couple of places to eat in Regencos but I would definitely recommend hiring a car when visiting to make the most of all the area has to offer.
The outdoor space at the villa was lovely with a shaded seating area, a small lawn and a private pool. The inside was full of character, decorated in a warm, Mediterranean style.
Saturday - We decided to slow right down and enjoy the villa. The weather was beautiful, so most of the day was spent around the pool or reading in the shade.
We had already been to the local supermarket, Esclat, to stock up on bits for lunch and snacks for the week.
Dinner was an easy and comforting choice: chicken and chips from Barbacoa Can Padres 2. Located about a 5-minute drive from Regencos on the way to Pals. We picked up a takeaway and ate outside at the villa, which was the perfect laid-back holiday evening.
Sunday - Every Sunday morning in Palafrugell there is the local market, so we headed there to explore. The stalls sell everything from clothes, bags & toys to fresh fruit, vegetables, meat & fish.
It was a great way to spend the morning, browsing as we went. At the end of the market, you come out into a square with several cafes - we stopped and enjoyed a coffee at Ocre Bar.
We also picked up some pastries from Fleca Baldiri, a bakery my partner has been visiting for years. It is now a bit of a tradition, and it never disappoints.
After a relaxed afternoon at the villa, we drove about 20 minutes to Palamós. It is home to my partner’s favourite restaurant, Hotel Vostra Llar, and as they don’t take reservations, we arrived for opening and joined the queue. The meal was lovely and the service faultless.
We both got fried potatoes, chorizo and eggs to start - which is not something you tend to see in the UK. We both really enjoyed it and I’m going to try to replicate it now I’m home, although I’m sure it will never be quite the same.
Monday - Another easy-going day at the villa, spending time together as a family.
As my mum came away with us, we were able to enjoy a date night in the evening and went back to Llafranc and Nova Pasta.
After dinner we walked from Llafranc along the coastal path to Calella de Palafrugell. The views along the cliffs were beautiful at sunset. Once we reached Calella, we treated ourselves to gelato and strolled back along the same route to Llafranc.
Tuesday - By now, we were fully in holiday mode, which meant plenty more pool time and another slow east day. Later on, we returned to Palamos for dinner and joined the queue again for Hotel Vostra Llar. This time Me & Mum went for the spaghetti bolognaise and both thought it was lovely.
** It has been a few years since we have visited the area so wanted to make the most of our favourite restaurants and soak them up properly **
Wednesday - We started the day with coffee at a local coffee shop called La Distreta. Then our attention turned to the highlight of the day which was the solar eclipse and where the best place was going to be to watch it.
We decided on the lighthouse at Llafranc, which is also a fantastic viewpoint over the cove.
Once we had worked out parking for the evening, we headed back to the villa for a quick lunch and then drove to the village of Peratellada. We all loved wandering its narrow streets, dipping in and out of the small shops and just taking in the character of the village. It’s hard to put its beauty into words, but it is somewhere I would highly recommend visiting.
In the evening we made our way up to the lighthouse at Llafranc to wait for the eclipse. The setting was stunning and it felt very special to share this moment with my son, knowing it could potentially be the only solar eclipse we experience together. Luckily, we had come prepared before leaving the UK with the recommended glasses for viewing the eclipse (Thank you Dad!).
The atmosphere was wonderful, with people from all over the world gathered in the same place and there were lots of cheers throughout.
Although I haven’t tried the restaurant myself, near the lighthouse is El Far Hotel Restaurant, which is now firmly on my list to try the next time we visit.
Thursday - Our last full day arrived far too quickly. We went out again for morning coffee at La Distreta and I think we all found a new favourite spot to return to next time we are in the area.
My partner had a few hours work to do, so we settled in for another gentle afternoon in the garden and by the pool. We were really lucky with the weather with a week full of sunshine.
For our final evening, my mum very kindly offered us a date night and there was only one place I wanted to go: back to Llafranc for one (or two) last plates of patatas bravas and a pepperoni pizza. Afterwards we headed back to the villa to pack for our early morning flight home on Friday,
There was so much more I would have loved to fit in, but our main focus was making sure our five-year old was happy. This meant plenty of time for afternoon naps and breaks, so that we could all enjoy the later evenings together.
If you know and love this part of Spain, I would love to hear which places you keep going back to. And if you have not visited yet, where in Spain do you love to escape to?
I hope you consider the Costa Brava coast for your next trip to Spain!
♥️, Kimberley.
