Done Prague and Budapest? Five city breaks to try next
If you feel like you've been to all the usual suspect, this one's for you.
When most people think “city break”, the same list comes up over and over again: Paris, Rome, Prague, Budapest, maybe Amsterdam or Barcelona.
They are all undeniably great, and there's a reason they're so popular. But I speak to a lot of people who say "yeah, we love it there, but we've done it before. It'd be nice to try something different."
If that sounds familiar, this is for you. These are the cities I go to when someone says 'we want somewhere completely different. They're still very doable over a weekend or even 3 or 4 nights.
Ljubljana & Lake Bled: Storybook City and Postcard Lake
If you like your cities to be pretty, calm and have just a little bit of a fairy tale feel, Ljubljana is one to have on your list.
Cobbled streets, a river running through the middle with cafes and bridges, a hilltop castle and just enough going on in the evenings without it being loud and lairy.
The beauty of Ljubljana is that you can pair it easily with Lake Bled. So instead of one city for three nights, you can do:
- A couple of nights in Ljubljana for wandering, cafes, castle views and a little bit of culture.
- Then a night or two at Lake Bled for that proper 'postcard' lake, island church and mountain backdrop.
It feels like a tiny mini-journey, but without long transfers or complicated logistics.
Good for you if:
- You like retty, walkable places rather than big hectic cities
- You enjoy a slower pace; coffee, cake, views, gentle exploring
- You like the idea of a bit of scenery and nature as well as city streets.
Riga: Baltic Charm With A Bit of Edge
If you want something that feels different to Western Europe but not as intimidating, Riga is a really nice option
The old town is full of cobbles, church spires and colourful buildings, with a bit of a Baltic edge to it. There is a lot of art nouveau architecture, a riverside, parks, markets and plenty of places to sit with a drink and people-watch.
Riga works well in both winter and summer. In winter and at Christmas is has that cosy, fairy light "wrap up warm and wander" feel.
It's one of those cities where you can happily mooch around without a huge tick-list, which is sometimes exactly what you want from a city break.
Good for you if:
- You've done Prague and want something in that vein, but a bit difference.
- You like a bit of history and architecture, but you're not desperate to go to every museum.
- You want a city that feels interesting and slightly off the main tourist trail, without being miles away.
Porto: Wine, Views and a Softer Alternative To Lisbon
If you like the idea of Portugal for a city break but fancy something a little bit different than Lisbon, Porto is ideal.
The city is hilly and colourful, built around the Duoro River. You have the old town on one side and the port wine cellars on the other, with bridges, trams, tiled churches and plenty of viewpoints.
Porto is great for:
- Wandering through the old streets, stopping for coffee and pastries
- Crossing over the river to taste port (even if you're convinced you don't like port; this stuff is worth trying properly)
- Taking in the views from different levels of the city and along the waterfront.
You can also easily add a bit of coast if you want some sea air, without turning it into a beach holiday.
Good for you if:
- You are drawn to food, wine and views.
- You like cities with character and a slightly slower feel than the bigger cities
- You want something that still feels war, and European, but not another trip to Barcelona.
Valencia: City and Beach In One Place
If you end up torn between shall we do a city and shall we just go to the beach, Valencia is a really nice compromise.
You get:
- A proper historic centre with squares, markets and little streets to explore.
- The Turia Gardens, a former riverbed turned into a long park, which is great for walking or cycling.
- A beach area that is actually in the city, so you c an have sand-between-your-toes time without needing a separate resort.
It has a lively food scene (this is actually where paella comes from ), some really striking modern architecture and a more relaxed feel than somewhere like Barcelona.
Good for you if:
- You want city and beach in the same long weekend
- You like the idea of tapas, wine and wandering, with the option to flop on a sunbed if you feel like it.
- You want Spain, but not the same names everyone else is saying
Tallinn: Christmas-Market Magic and Medieval Streets
If you love the idea of Christmas markets or wintry city breaks but want something beyond the usual German and Austrian options, Tallinn is a lovely choice.
The old town is genuinely medieval in style: cobbled streets, old city walls and towers, steeples and pretty squares. When it is cold and there are lights up, it can seem like walking around a Christmas Card.
Tallinn works well for:
- A long weekend and Christmas market time with stalls, lights and that cosy, wrapped-up feel.
- Short winter breaks where you want it to feel properly wintery, not just grey and damp.
- Simple days of wandering, stopping for hot drinks and cake, climbing up for views, ducking into interesting little shops.
In the warmer months, it still works as a city break, but it does really come into its own at Christmastime.
Good for you if:
- You loved Prague at Christmas and want something that feels a bit different next time.
- You like old towns, viewpoints and a slightly Nordic feel without going full Scandinavia on prices.
- You're not afraid of packing a proper coat and making a city break feel seasonal.
So which one is you?
All of these are great options, but they suit slightly different personalities.
Very simply:
The key is not just picking a name off a list, but thinking about what you want your days to look like, how much time you want to spend wandering and exploring, and whether you want history and culture or views and beach.
