From Ice Rinks to Ocean waves: A decade performing at sea,

Lisa Brewin on 21 Mar 2026

For 11 years, my life unfolded somewhere between ice and ocean. As a professional ice skater on cruise ships, I didn’t just travel the world—I performed across it, lived within it, and grew through it. What started as a career became the most transformative chapter of my life.

Life on board a cruise ship is unlike any else.

Luxury cruise ships are more than transport they are a floating world with its own rhythm, heartbeat and its own energy. My days onboard were never the same and I loved it. One moment I’d be rehearsing complex routines on the ice to orchestrating crew drills, dancing in a parade, or helping shore excursions. Every performance required precision, teamwork, and adaptability—but that’s what made it so exciting.

Perks of the job

One of the greatest gifts my skates gave me was the opportunity to explore the world in a way few people experience. I woke up in new destinations almost daily—tropical beaches, historic cities, hidden coastal towns, and iconic landmarks. Within a contract I could be walking along white sandy shores, the next exploring bustling streets filled with culture and history and then causally passing a glacier . Travel became more than a perk—it became a way of life.

What makes cruising so special.

Beyond the destinations and performances, it was the people who truly made this journey unforgettable. Crew members quickly became family one of which I named my son after. Living and working together, sharing experiences across continents, creates bonds that last a lifetime. These were people who inspired me, challenged me, and ultimately changed me. I also made lasting bonds with pinnacle/ repeat cruisers, unlike my other touring productions on land we got to interact with the audience of our shows, some had never seen an ice show before; others returned night after night. You’d see families creating memories, couples celebrating milestones, all discovering something new. Being part of those moments—feeling the audience respond, hearing the applause echo across the rink—was something I never took for granted. I was fortunate to perform across multiple ships and classes within the fleet, each offering its own unique atmosphere. But what remained constant was the standard of entertainment. The shows were nothing short of spectacular and I was proud to be apart of them. From intricate ice performances to productions that rivalled West End theatre, the level of talent onboard was extraordinary. I watched and worked alongside performers delivering breathtaking routines—from powerful theatrical storytelling to 17-metre dive acts that left audiences speechless.

Yet, some of the most unforgettable moments happened offstage. There’s a certain magic to being at sea at night. I’ll never forget standing on deck ( which I did often) watching the moonlight ripple across the water as the ship moved quietly through the darkness. It’s a kind of stillness you don’t find on land—peaceful, grounding, and surreal all at once. The world feels small  and full of wonder.

Those 11 years cruising truly shaped who I am today. They pushed me beyond my comfort zone, strengthened my resilience, and allowed me to pursue my passion on a global stage. I wasn’t just skating—I was telling stories, connecting with people, and living a life driven by what I love. Cruising, of course, isn’t for everyone. Life at sea comes with its own challenges—long days, time away from home, constant movement. But if you’ve never experienced it, even as a guest, it’s something truly special. Because a cruise isn’t just a holiday. It’s waking up somewhere new. It’s world-class entertainment just steps away. It’s sunsets that stop you in your tracks and nights that feel infinite under a sky full of stars. It’s the unexpected moments—the ones you never planned—that stay with you long after you return home. From frozen stages to open oceans, this journey gave me more than I ever imagined. It gave me the world. And my advice would be if you ever get the chance to experience it—even just once—go on a cruise, see the world in style.
