Safari days

A magical slice of South Africa: city energy, wild safaris & sky‑high views.

Some trips leave you feeling quietly changed. My recent journey through South Africa did exactly that: A blend of urban buzz, wide open spaces, wildlife encounters, and some of the most imaginative places I have ever stayed. From stylish Johannesburg and unforgettable dining to walking safaris and sleeping on a luxury train above a river full of elephants and hippos, it was the kind of trip that reminds you why travel is so powerful

Johannesburg: cool, creative & effortlessly stylish

Johannesburg was my gateway to South Africa and the perfect place to begin.  My base in the city was Peach, which feels less like a hotel and more like staying with a very stylish friend. Think soft, contemporary design, warm tones, thoughtful details and an easy, residential feel.  It is the kind of place where you instantly relax, good coffee in the morning, calm corners to sit with a book, and a welcoming team who are genuinely excited to share “their” Johannesburg.

One of the absolute highlights was dinner at the Pot Luck Club. The concept revolves around sharing plates ( though I ate alone and loved it!), which makes it perfect if you love trying “a bit of everything”.  Plates arrive in a playful, almost choreographed sequence: Bold flavours, clever use of spice, beautiful presentation and surprising combinations that somehow just work.  The atmosphere is stylish but relaxed, with polished service and a real sense of occasion. By the end of the night, it had firmly earned a place in my mental list of “restaurants I will talk about for years”.

Into the wild: 2 nights on safari at Thanda, KZN

From Johannesburg, I headed to KwaZulu‑Natal for two nights on safari at Thanda Reserve, and the wildlife magic started before I had even arrived properly. On the way in, we spotted a cheetah, which set the tone beautifully, this was going to be special.  At Thanda, days fall into an easy, natural rhythm - Early morning game drives as the bush wakes up, golden light catching the grass, and that delicious sense of anticipation as you scan the horizon. Evenings bring sunset drives, sundowners in the bush and the thrill of searching for nocturnal life under a sky full of stars.

Back at the lodge, it is all about comfort and atmosphere: Crackling fires, generous South African hospitality and those quiet moments when you realise just how far away everyday life feels.

Skywalks & sweeping views, The Panorama Route & Angel’s View

Next, I flew to Mpumalanga to explore the famous Panorama Route, one of South Africa’s most spectacular drives. Think huge views, dramatic cliffs, tumbling waterfalls and landscapes that make you feel very small in the best possible way.  Graskop Gorge was a standout. The combination of viewpoints, walks and that feeling of standing on the edge of something vast really brings home the scale of the region. You are constantly tempted to stop, look again, and take “just one more” photo that never quite captures how it feels to be there.

My base here was Angel’s View, perfectly named. Perched with sweeping vistas, it offers a front‑row seat to sunrises, sunsets and everything in between. Waking up, drawing the curtains and having that endless view laid out in front of you is a special kind of luxury.  Angel’s View is the ideal stop between safaris and the coast or Kruger. It gives you a chance to breathe, explore at your own pace and soak up that high‑altitude beauty without needing to rush.

Sofa safari bliss: a night at Kruger Gate Hotel

From there, I moved on to Kruger Gate Hotel for a single night that felt perfectly judged.  This is “sofa safari” at its best. You can sit in comfort, drink in hand, and simply watch the bush unfold in front of you. Animals come and go, the light changes, and you get that wonderfully lazy sense that the safari is coming to you.  It is an excellent option for guests who want to ease into the Kruger experience or add a softer, more relaxed night either before or after a more immersive safari stay.   As a longer stay, you could combine exploring the Panorama Route with safari time.

Walking the bush: Thokwane River Camp & morning walking safaris

Next stop: Thokwane River Camp, where the safari experience deepened even further.  Here, along with traditional vehicle safaris, we were able to do two morning walking safaris. There is something transformative about being on foot in the bush: Suddenly, every sound matters, every track tells a story, and you become acutely aware of just how alive everything around you is.  Bird calls become your soundtrack. Your guide starts talking about spoor, dung and the small details that game drives can easily skim past. “Poo studies” sound amusing, but they are a genuinely fascinating way to understand who has been there before you and what they were doing. You are not just spotting animals, you are learning to read the bush itself.  Thokwane River Camp balances this sense of adventure with comfort back at base, so you return from your walks to hot showers, good food and time to reflect on what you have just experienced.

The grand finale: 2 nights at Shalati Train on the Bridge

The trip ended with something truly extraordinary: Two nights at the incredible Shalati Train on the Bridge.  Imagine a luxury train, permanently stationed on a historic railway bridge high above the river in Kruger. Your room is a beautifully designed carriage suite, with huge windows that make the landscape feel like a moving painting, even though you are perfectly still.  Luxury suspended above the river.  Days and nights here are all about contrast: the ultimate in fine dining and elegant interiors, paired with the rawness of the wild directly beneath you.  While you are sipping a drink or enjoying a multi‑course dinner, elephants and hippos move through the river below. You might glance down to see a herd wading through the water or hear hippos grunting as the sun sinks. It feels otherworldly, cocooned in comfort while completely connected to the wilderness.  The combination of location, architecture and service makes Shalati feel like a once‑in‑a‑lifetime stay. It is not just a hotel, it is an experience in its own right and the perfect crescendo to a journey filled with special moments.

What made this itinerary so memorable was the balance and progression:  A stylish, culinary start in Johannesburg, easing gently into South Africa with design‑led stays and world‑class dining.  A classic Big Five safari at Thanda to bring the wildlife magic to life from the very beginning.  The drama of the Panorama Route and the space to exhale at Angel’s View.   A laid‑back “sofa safari” experience at Kruger Gate to slow the pace again.  Immersive walking safaris at Thokwane River Camp, deepening the connection to the bush.  A show‑stopping finale at Shalati Train on the Bridge, where luxury and wilderness meet in a way that feels genuinely unique.

It is a journey that moves from urban to wild, from wide‑angle vistas to tiny details in the dust, from game drives to walking, from lodge life to a train suspended above a river full of elephants and hippos.  This is exactly the kind of carefully paced, experience‑rich itinerary I love to design for my clients:  Each stop chosen for a reason, each stay adding a different texture and emotion to the story.
