Antigua: The Caribbean island that surprised me most...
(and why it's now one of my favourite luxury holiday destinations)
Think Antigua is just another beautiful Caribbean beach destination? I did too… until I experienced it properly.
Yes, Antigua is famous for its 365 white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and luxury resorts. But after spending a week exploring the island, I discovered there's so much more beneath the surface. From authentic cultural experiences and incredible local food to luxury hotels that each offer something completely different, Antigua quickly became one of those destinations that stays with you long after you've returned home.
If you're dreaming of a luxury Caribbean holiday,
here are five reasons why Antigua deserves a place at the top of your travel
wish list.
1. Antigua is far more than beautiful beaches
The beaches are every bit as spectacular as you've imagined. But some of my favourite moments happened away from the coastline.
A Tropical Adventure Jeep Safari took us through colourful villages, lush countryside and dramatic viewpoints overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It offered a fascinating insight into the island's history, culture and everyday life, something you simply don't experience if you stay within your resort.
If you love combining relaxation with exploration, Antigua
offers the perfect balance. You can spend one day unwinding on powder-soft sand
and the next discovering hidden corners of the island that many visitors never
see.
2. The best holidays immerse you in the local culture
One of the highlights of my trip was a Caribbean cooking class at Nicole's Table.
Learning to prepare traditional Antiguan dishes while hearing stories about the island's culinary heritage made the experience feel incredibly personal. My favourite recipe was the famous Antiguan rum cake, a delicious reminder that some of the best holiday memories are created around a table rather than a swimming pool.
Another unforgettable experience was visiting the Academy of Rum, where we discovered the history of Antigua's rum before blending our own personalised bottle to take home.
These are the experiences that transform a holiday from
enjoyable into unforgettable.

3. Luxury means something different to everyone
One thing that really stood out was the variety of luxury hotels in Antigua. Each has its own personality, making it easy to find the perfect match depending on how you like to travel.
Blue Waters Resort & Spa is ideal for families and multi-generational holidays, offering spacious accommodation and a relaxed, elegant atmosphere.
Carlisle Bay is perfect for travellers who want a beautiful beachfront setting with plenty to do, whether that's tennis, watersports or simply enjoying one of Antigua's most stunning stretches of sand.
For couples, food lovers and those who enjoy discovering local restaurants, Hodges Bay Resort & Spa offers contemporary luxury in a fantastic location.
We also visited Galley Bay Resort & Spa and Pineapple Beach Club, giving me an even deeper understanding of which properties best suit different types of travellers.
That's one of the biggest benefits of working with someone
who's experienced these hotels first-hand, I can recommend the one that's
genuinely right for you, rather than simply the most popular.

4. Antigua's food scene deserves just as much attention as its beaches
The island's dining scene completely exceeded my expectations.
From relaxed lunches at OJ's Beach Bar and Dennis Beach Bar, overlooking the breathtaking Freyes Beach, to an unforgettable sunset barbecue at Shirley Heights, every meal showcased the warmth and flavour of Caribbean hospitality.
One evening we enjoyed dinner at BeachLimerz, where fresh seafood, vibrant local flavours and a laid-back atmosphere perfectly captured the spirit of the island.
If food plays an important role in your travels, Antigua
certainly won't disappoint.
5. The difference first-hand knowledge makes
This trip reminded me why I believe personalised travel planning is so valuable.
Every hotel, every excursion and every recommendation I make is based on genuine experience, not simply a brochure or website description.
Whether it's choosing the right luxury resort, recommending the best local experiences or suggesting restaurants you'll genuinely love, I can help create a holiday that's tailored to the way you like to travel.
Because no two travellers are the same, and neither are two
holidays to Antigua.
