From Amsterdam’s Charm to Bavarian Romance: My Viva Cruises Experience

Lucy Dobson on 12 May 2026

I have just returned from an 8 night Viva Cruises voyage, “From Amsterdam’s Charm to Bavarian Romance,” on the beautiful Viva Enjoy. It was a relaxed way to explore some of Europe’s most charming cities and towns, with ever changing views right outside my window.

Amsterdam to Cologne: easing into river life

We set off from Amsterdam, gliding past canals and gabled houses before joining the Rhine. That first evening on board felt wonderfully calming: unpack once, settle into a stylish, comfortable ship and watch Europe come to you.

In Cologne, instead of a walking tour I borrowed one of the complimentary bikes. Germany is very cycle‑friendly, so I spent the morning pedalling through neighbourhoods most tourists never see. We had wind, rain, hail and sunshine in one ride, but it was a brilliant way to explore.

Sparkling wines and storybook towns

In Koblenz I joined a “Sparkling Koblenz” excursion: a guided walk followed by a local fizz tasting. Tasting wine at 10.20 am felt a little early, even for me, but it was a fun, informative insight into German winemaking and I could not resist bringing a bottle home.

Further along the river, Mainz, Wertheim and Würzburg really stole my heart. Think half‑timbered houses, hilltop castles and churches filled with gold details and chandeliers. They feel like medieval film sets, yet are very much living, breathing towns.

Haßfurt to Bamberg: racing the ship by bike

One of my favourite days was in Haßfurt. Another Travel Counsellor and I decided to “race” Viva Enjoy to Bamberg by bike: just over 22 miles along quiet riverside paths and through tiny villages. We stopped at a small brewery for 1‑euro beers, took in the scenery and still made it to Bamberg before the ship.

The captain greeted us back on board with mimosas, slightly amazed we had actually beaten him there. Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a fitting finale with its historic old town and impressive cathedral.

Life on board Viva Enjoy

Viva Enjoy felt like a boutique hotel on the water. The ship is modern and stylish, the service genuinely outstanding and the food excellent. Some of my best moments were simply lying in bed watching the river drift by or sitting in the pool as vineyards slid past.

I also loved the social side: sharing stories over dinner and making new friends, while always having the option to find a quiet corner and just watch the world go by.

Who this would suit

I think this kind of river cruise is perfect for:

  • A girls’ getaway with a difference
  • Anyone unsure about large ocean ships
  • Travellers with mobility considerations who appreciate a gentler pace
  • Those dreaming of Christmas markets, with easy access to beautiful riverside towns

As someone who adores ocean cruising, I was curious how I would feel about river cruising. I am officially converted and might love it just as much.

If you are tempted by the idea of exploring Europe’s rivers, from Amsterdam to Nuremberg or beyond, I would be delighted to share more about my experience on Viva Enjoy and help you choose the right sailing.
