A day in Ghent – shore excursion from Zeebrugge on NCL Aqua

Mandy Oldknow on 27 Mar 2025

While sailing on the beautiful Norwegian Aqua, we docked in Zeebrugge and decided to do something a little different. Between us, we have been to Bruges more times than I can count (I was there only last September on a Disney cruise), so this time we chose an organised shore excursion to Ghent instead. I am very glad we did.

Getting from Zeebrugge to Ghent

We booked the NCL tour in advance at 61 US dollars per person. It was a five‑hour trip in total, with a comfortable coach journey of around an hour each way.

Once we arrived in Ghent, the coach dropped us near the city and we hopped onto a small boat shuttle that took us straight into the centre. It was a lovely way to arrive: gliding in along the water, with the historic buildings and spires gradually appearing around us.

Waffles, sunshine and canal views

We had some free time before our canal tour, so naturally we did what any sensible visitor to Belgium does.

We found waffles. And beer. In the sunshine.

Sitting by the water with a plate of waffles and a local beer felt like the perfect way to start our visit, and it gave us a chance to simply soak up the atmosphere for a little while.

After that, we boarded an electric boat for a guided canal tour. Our guide was excellent – full of information and little stories – and with the sun shining, it was such a relaxing way to see more of the city without rushing around on foot.

First impressions of Ghent

Ghent has so much character. Even in a short visit there is plenty to catch your eye.

You have:

The medieval bulk of Gravensteen Castle

The famous trio of towers – St Nicholas’ Church, the Belfry of Ghent and St Bavo’s Cathedral (home to the Ghent Altarpiece)

Canals lined with beautiful old buildings

Cobbled streets and lively little squares full of life

It is one of those cities where you can happily wander, turn a corner and suddenly find yourself in front of something very old, very grand or very pretty – sometimes all three at once.

A great alternative to Bruges

For us, Ghent was a brilliant alternative to Bruges and gave us a fresh perspective on Belgium’s history and architecture.

If your ship is docking in Zeebrugge and you have already “done” Bruges, or you simply fancy trying somewhere a little different, I would happily recommend this NCL excursion.

Just some TC's on a bridge, Ghent

You get an easy, organised day out, a taste of a very charming city, and – if you are anything like us – waffles, beer and a sunny canal cruise all wrapped into one.
