A Day Onboard Ambassador Ambition in Liverpool: My Honest First Impressions

First impressions: small ship, relaxed atmosphere

Ambition is a smaller ship, carrying around 1,200 guests, and you really feel that in the best possible way.

She has: 

A friendly, intimate atmosphere 

A relaxed, unhurried pace 

A layout that is easy to get around without needing a map

 

It feels like the kind of ship where you can settle into your holiday, find your favourite corners and actually unwind, rather than feeling as if you should be doing something every minute of the day.

 

A ship with her own personality

Ambition originally entered service in 1999 but had a major refurbishment in 2023, and I thought she looked well cared for.

There is a mix of: 

Traditional cruise‑ship touches 

More modern spaces 

Plenty of little details that give her character

I liked that she did not feel like a copy‑and‑paste version of every other ship. Ambition has a personality of her own.

There is also a nice nod to destinations and British influences in the way different areas are named. Being onboard in Liverpool made “The Cavern” particularly appropriate and gave us plenty to chat about as we walked around.

 

Life onboard: what to expect

Ambassador offers a traditional style of cruising: think good food, time to relax, and entertainment in the evenings, rather than waterslides and neon everywhere.

From what I have seen and heard from others, Ambition is not trying to be a five‑star luxury resort at sea. She is positioned as a good‑value, adults‑only, no‑fly option for people who like a more classic, British‑style cruise experience.

Onboard you will find: 

A choice of restaurants and bars 

Entertainment venues 

Comfortable lounges and seating areas where you can just sit and watch the sea

Wellness Centre with gym (no hydro pool) 

 

For me, one of the big appeals of a smaller ship is how easy everything feels:

You are not trekking along endless corridors 

You do not need to study a deck plan every five minutes 

It is simple to find your way around and bump into familiar faces

 

There is still enough going on to keep you occupied, but there is also plenty of space to simply sit back with a drink, a book or a sea view and enjoy being away.

 

Cabins: comfortable and practical

During my visit I had the chance to see a selection of cabins.

Compared to some of the very newest ships, the cabins feel a little more traditional in style, but they: 

Are clean and comfortable 

Have everything you need for a relaxing cruise 

Offer a good range of categories to suit different budgets

As always, I think it helps to be honest about how you actually use your cabin.

If you like having your own outdoor space, especially on scenic itineraries where there is a lot to see as you sail, a balcony can be well worth considering. If you mostly sleep and shower in your cabin, an inside or ocean view might suit you perfectly.

The key is choosing the option that fits how you travel, rather than what looks flashiest in the brochure.

Who I think would enjoy Ambition

This is where Ambassador, and Ambition in particular, really comes into her own.

I think Ambition will appeal if you:

Prefer a more traditional style of cruising 

Enjoy the feel of a smaller, comfy ship 

Like a relaxed, grown‑up atmosphere 

Love the convenience of sailing from the UK without having to fly

Ambition is adults‑only, which is a big plus if you are looking for a quieter, more adult‑focused environment.

With a range of itineraries sailing from the UK, there are plenty of opportunities to explore different destinations while still enjoying the familiarity of a ship that feels comfortable and manageable in size.

 

My verdict

I went onboard Ambition wanting to get to know both the ship and the Ambassador brand a little better.

I left thinking, “I can see exactly who this ship would suit.”

And that is one of the things I love most about my job. There is no single ship that is perfect for everyone. It is about understanding:

What you enjoy on holiday 

How you like to travel 

What really matters to you

then matching you with the ship that fits.

For the right person, I think Ambition could be a really enjoyable choice. If you are expecting huge waterparks, bumper cars or the very latest mega‑ship features, she will not be the right fit. If you prefer something smaller, calmer and more traditional, she starts to make a lot more sense.

She has her own character, a relaxed atmosphere and that lovely “smaller ship” feel where you can quickly get to know your surroundings without feeling overwhelmed.

So yes, I was pleasantly surprised by Ambition.
