CLIA River Champions Class of 2026

CLIA River Cruise Champion: Class of 202626

Mandy Oldknow on 26 Jun 2026

From a freezing cold day in Manchester to a full‑blown heatwave in Birmingham – what a difference a few months can make. On Friday 26 June, I headed to Birmingham for the graduation of the CLIA River Champions Class of 2026, after six months of learning, studying and diving even deeper into the world of river cruising.

From Manchester to the Class of 2026

CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) launched the River Cruise Champion Class of 2026 in Manchester on 20 November 2025.

I remember that first day very clearly for two reasons:

It was absolutely freezing outside

Inside, we were being introduced to a programme that was clearly going to be a lot more than “turn up, listen, get a certificate”

Day one

Fast‑forward to graduation day and the contrast could not have been greater. Birmingham was basking in a heatwave, and instead of shivering in a coat, I was very grateful for air‑con and cold drinks.

A six‑month deep dive into river cruising

This was not a quick, “tick the box” course.

CLIA describes the River Cruise Champion scheme as a six‑month programme, and that is exactly how it felt. It combined:

Webinars and online learning

Panel discussions and virtual workshops

Self‑study modules

Regular knowledge checks and assessments

Our first assessment arrived in January, with further learning and reviews spread across the following months. It kept us on our toes and made sure the information was actually going in, not just passing us by in a blur of PowerPoint slides.

Over the six months we covered:

Key river cruising destinations

Individual river cruise products and fleets

Practical sales techniques and matching the right client to the right river experience

The content was developed in partnership with CLIA’s river cruise line members, which meant we were hearing directly from the brands that actually operate the ships.

Getting to know the river cruise lines

One of the most valuable parts of the programme was getting to understand the differences between the various river operators.

Brands featured in the learning included:

A‑ROSA

Amadeus River Cruises

AmaWaterways

APT Luxury Travel

Avalon Waterways

Celebrity River Cruises

CroisiEurope

Emerald Cruises

Riverside Luxury Cruises

Riviera Travel

Scenic

Trafalgar River Cruises

TUI River Cruises

Uniworld

VIVA Cruises

Spending time with so many different products side by side really hammered home one big point: there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” river cruise.

Each line has its own personality, style and strengths, whether that is:

Relaxed and informal vs ultra‑luxury

Destination‑immersive vs more leisurely pace

Contemporary design vs classic elegance

That is exactly the kind of nuance I want when I am helping someone choose their river cruise. It is not just “Do you want to go on the Danube?” but “Which ship, which atmosphere, and which style will feel right for you?”

Assessments, air‑con and The Botanist

After six months of modules, webinars, river view conference in Amsterdam and assessments, the programme culminated in a final knowledge review before we could officially graduate as CLIA River Cruise Champions.

For graduation, I stayed overnight at the Holiday Inn Express in Birmingham which, very conveniently, gave me a direct view of The Botanist, our celebration venue. Even more importantly, it had excellent air conditioning, which felt like a minor miracle in the middle of a heatwave.

Then it was time to celebrate.

At The Botanist we:

Received our certificates

Enjoyed some fantastic food

Caught up with fellow River Champions

Looked back at everything we had covered since that icy launch day in Manchester

The Botanist Hanging Kebab

It felt like a genuine celebration of the work, time and commitment that had gone into the programme over the previous six months, rather than just a quick handshake and a photo. There obviously was that photo though!

So what does being a River Cruise Champion actually mean?

For me, graduating as part of the CLIA River Cruise Champion Class of 2026 is about much more than having a new line on my CV.

It means:

I have up‑to‑date, in‑depth knowledge of a wide range of river cruise lines

I understand how their products differ and who they are best suited to

I can talk about river cruising with genuine confidence and detail, not just broad brushstrokes

In short, it gives me even more insight to draw on when you are thinking about your next river cruise.

Whether you are dreaming of the Danube, curious about the Douro, tempted by the Rhône, or wondering which line will best match your travel style, that is exactly what this programme was designed to help with.

And now I can officially say I am a CLIA River Cruise Champion – Class of 2026.

It is something I am very proud of, and something I am really looking forward to putting to good use when we plan your next journey along the rivers of Europe and beyond.
