Long-Haul Travel Is Changing: New Innovations from Air New Zealand and Qantas
Would you choose a four-hour lie-flat sleep pod or a 22-hour non-stop flight?
Could Flying to Australia and New Zealand Soon Become Much More Comfortable?
For many travellers, a holiday to Australia or New Zealand is a dream trip. Stunning scenery, incredible wildlife, vibrant cities and the chance to reconnect with family and friends make the journey worthwhile. The biggest challenge? The flight.
Getting to the other side of the world has always required patience, stamina and, in some cases, a good sense of humour. But exciting developments from Air New Zealand and Qantas could soon make those long hours in the air much more comfortable.
A Bed in the Sky – Without a Business Class Fare
Air New Zealand has long been known for innovation. Fifteen years ago, it introduced the Skycouch,â„¢ allowing passengers to transform a row of Economy seats into a more comfortable space for resting.
Now the airline is taking things even further with the launch of Economy Skynest â„¢.
From December 2026, travellers flying between Europe and New Zealand via New York will be able to reserve a dedicated lie-flat sleep pod on the New York to Auckland sector. Each pod can be booked for a four-hour session, giving passengers the opportunity to enjoy proper sleep during one of the longest parts of the journey.
For many travellers, particularly those who struggle to sleep sitting upright, this could transform the experience of flying long haul. Imagine arriving in New Zealand feeling refreshed and ready to start exploring, rather than spending the first few days recovering from the journey.
The Rise of the Non-Stop Flight
At the same time, Qantas is preparing to launch its highly anticipated non-stop flights between London and Sydney.
With flight times of around 22 hours, these services will be among the longest commercial flights in the world. While that might sound daunting, Qantas has designed the experience with passenger wellbeing firmly in mind.
The airline's specially configured aircraft will carry fewer passengers, creating more space throughout the cabin. There will also be a dedicated Wellbeing Zone where travellers can stretch, move around and take a break from their seat during the flight.
The goal is simple: to help passengers arrive feeling as comfortable and refreshed as possible.
More Choice Than Ever Before
What makes these developments particularly exciting is the choice they offer.
Some travellers may prefer to break the journey and enjoy a dedicated sleep session in Air New Zealand's Skynest. Others may love the idea of stepping on a plane in London and arriving in Sydney without changing aircraft along the way.
There is no right or wrong answer. The best option will depend on your travel style, budget and priorities.
