Munich Christmas Markets

Last December, just a week before Christmas, we nipped over to Munich for three nights to get properly into the festive mood. It turned out to be the most magical way to kick off the Christmas holidays and is a trip I would happily repeat every year.

We stayed right in the city centre, which was absolutely ideal. The moment we walked out of the hotel, we were straight into a world of twinkling lights, cobbled streets and the soft hum of Christmas music. Every corner seemed to reveal another cluster of wooden stalls, another little square strung with fairy lights, and yet another tempting aroma drifting through the cold air.

Marienplatz: Munich’s Iconic Christmas Market

We started at the most famous of them all: the Christmas market in Marienplatz, Munich’s main square. Set against the backdrop of the stunning neo-gothic town hall, it honestly felt like walking into a snow globe.

The square was packed with stalls selling everything from traditional wooden decorations and glass baubles to candles, toys and handmade crafts. The huge Christmas tree sparkled above it all, and we simply wandered, browsed, sampled and soaked it all in. It is exactly how you imagine a classic European Christmas market to be.

A Feast for the Senses at the Food & Flower Market

Another favourite was the food and flower market. Even in December, it was bursting with colour and life. Seasonal flowers, wreaths and greenery created a beautiful contrast against the crisp winter air, and the stalls were full of festive bits and pieces perfect for decorating your home.

The food stalls were impossible to resist: the scent of roasting nuts, spices and freshly cooked treats followed us everywhere. It was the sort of place where you tell yourself you are “just looking” and then suddenly you are carrying a bag of goodies and wondering how many snacks count as lunch.

Stepping Back in Time at the Medieval Market

The medieval market was like stepping straight into another era. Many of the stallholders were in costume, and the whole setup felt wonderfully authentic, with traditional music, rustic wooden stands and ornate hand-carved goods on display.

It was here that we tried Feuerzangenbowle for the first time: a punchy hot rum wine served in clay bowls, topped with a rum-soaked sugar cube that is set alight so it slowly melts and caramelises into the drink. Very potent, very warming and very, very moreish!

Glühwein, Ice Skaters and Magical Evenings

Glühwein quickly became a daily ritual. One evening, we stood by the ice rink with our steaming mugs, watching skaters glide, wobble and laugh their way around under strings of fairy lights. The combination of the cold air, the warmth of the mulled wine, the music and the sound of laughter created a wonderfully cosy, Christmassy atmosphere.

In between all the markets, we made sure to slow down and simply enjoy Munich itself. The architecture is magnificent, and beautifully lit at night. Grand façades, impressive squares and historic buildings make the perfect backdrop to the festive markets and give the whole city an extra sense of occasion.

Bavarian Comfort Food at Its Best

Of course, no trip to Munich at Christmas would be complete without fully embracing the local food. We tucked into Bavarian favourites like bratwurst in crusty rolls and crisp schnitzel, along with hearty dishes that are ideal for a chilly December evening. Whether it was a quick bite from a street stall or a relaxed meal in a cosy restaurant, everything felt indulgent, warming and perfectly in tune with the season.

A Wonderful Way to Start Christmas

After three nights of wandering markets, sipping Glühwein and Feuerzangenbowle, admiring beautiful architecture and enjoying fantastic Bavarian food, we came home feeling completely ready for Christmas.
