Fuerteventura – Simply Perfect, All Year Round
For a relaxing escape, an adventure-filled getaway or an island to explore at your own pace at any time of year, Fuerteventura is, in my opinion, just perfect. With its reliably warm climate, crystal-clear Atlantic waters and dramatic volcanic landscapes, it has become one of our family’s favourite places to return to again and again.
Getting there and getting around
We have chosen Fuerteventura for four family holidays now, at different times of the year from summer to October half term, and each visit has offered something a little different while still feeling wonderfully familiar. It is one of those destinations that seems to welcome you back like an old friend.
With a flight time of around four hours from several UK airports, Fuerteventura feels easy to reach yet a world away once you arrive. The airport is compact and straightforward, so you are through and on your way in no time.
We have always hired a car, and I would really recommend it. The island is made for exploring, and it is honestly one of the easiest places we have ever driven: quiet roads, clear signage and ever-changing views of mountains, coastline and traditional villages.
Where to stay
As a family we tend to favour villas, and one of the best options we have experienced was at the hotel and villa complex at Las Playitas. It offered the perfect balance: the privacy of our own villa with a private pool, combined with the facilities and support of a larger resort.
For us, that meant our children could happily splash about in the pool while we relaxed nearby, with no need to rush for a sun lounger. At the same time, we still had access to restaurants, leisure activities and the reassurance of on-site assistance. It felt like the best of both worlds: independence plus service.
Poolside lounging or days of discovery
If your ideal holiday involves little more than a good book, a comfortable lounger and a choice between pool and beach, Fuerteventura is perfect. Long, sandy beaches, clear water and plenty of sunshine make it incredibly easy to switch off.
However, if (like us) you enjoy combining lazy days with a little adventure, the island delivers in spades. From boat trips and hiking to picture-perfect old towns, there is something different to do each day without it ever feeling rushed.
A day trip to Los Lobos
One of our most memorable experiences was an excursion to the tiny island of Los Lobos, just off the northern tip of Fuerteventura. This car-free nature reserve, dusted with black lava rock and edged by turquoise bays, feels wonderfully untouched.
Boats depart from the harbour at Corralejo for a smooth crossing of about half an hour. Once there you will find calm, shallow waters that are ideal for snorkelling and sheltered beaches. Facilities are limited, so I would recommend taking plenty of water and a picnic and treating it as a simple, back-to-nature kind of day.
Endless sands at Morro Jable
Head south and you reach Morro Jable, where the promenade opens out onto a truly spectacular stretch of beach. Here, soft white sand appears to run for miles, and the ocean view is as peaceful as it is impressive.
We usually park along the promenade and walk down to the shore, then treat ourselves to some sun loungers and an umbrella for the day. It is well worth the few euros for the comfort and shade, especially if you are travelling with children.
Hiking with a view at Barranco de las Peñitas
If you are looking to stretch your legs, I would highly recommend the walk through the Barranco de las Peñitas gorge. The route winds between striking rock formations and leads to the small, whitewashed Ermita de la Peña chapel, tucked away in this dramatic landscape.
It is a beautiful spot to pause and take everything in. On a windy day, the sound rushing through the rocks can almost resemble a ghostly choir, adding a touch of magic to the experience.
Stepping back in time in Betancuria
One of our favourite drives takes us to Betancuria, the island’s old capital. Nestled in a fertile valley surrounded by mountains, it feels a world away from the coastal resorts. The church of Iglesia de Santa MarÃa, with its wooden ceiling, is well worth a visit, and the little restaurants clustered around it serve some of the best tapas we have eaten on the island, often featuring delicious local goat’s cheese.
On the way there, be sure to stop at the top of the Tegu mountain pass. The panoramic views over the valley and rugged interior are unforgettable and really give you a sense of Fuerteventura’s wild beauty.

For us as a family, Fuerteventura offers that rare blend of ease and adventure. Whether you are into water sports, scuba diving, hiking, or you simply want to chill out by the pool with the family, the island makes it incredibly easy to do as much or as little as you like.
It is an island of big open skies, huge beaches and space to breathe, with just enough charm and character in its towns and villages to keep each day feeling special.
