Thailand: My 12-Day Luxury Journey Through Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Elephant Hills, Khao Lak & Koh Samui
There are some destinations that exceed every expectation, and for me, Thailand was one of them. I'd visited Thailand with an open mind, but I came home completely inspired. Over 12 incredible days, I experienced bustling cities, peaceful temples, luxury hotels, ethical elephant encounters, floating lake camps, incredible food and some of the warmest hospitality I've ever received. More importantly, I travelled the way I would design a holiday for my own clients—taking time to really experience each destination rather than rushing from place to place. Here's exactly where I went and why I think Thailand deserves to be at the very top of your travel wish list.
Bangkok
Bangkok is vibrant, energetic and completely unlike anywhere else I've visited.
The city never seems to stop, yet somehow manages to blend centuries-old temples with rooftop bars, luxury shopping malls and some of the world's best hotels.
I stayed at the incredible Four Seasons Bangkok, which immediately showed me just how luxurious Thailand can be.
During my stay I explored:
- The spectacular Grand Palace
- Chinatown's incredible street food
- The colourful Flower Market
- Stylish rooftop bars overlooking the Chao Phraya River
Although I loved experiencing Bangkok, I personally wouldn't recommend spending too long here if you're looking for a relaxing holiday.
Two nights was perfect before heading north.
Chiang Mai – My Favourite City
If someone asked me where they absolutely must visit in Thailand, I'd probably say Chiang Mai.
The pace is slower. The people are incredibly welcoming. The scenery is beautiful.
This is where Thailand really captured my heart.
One of the absolute highlights was spending almost five hours at Mama Noi's Cookery School.
After visiting a local food market to buy fresh ingredients, I learnt to cook:
- Pad Thai
- Tom Yum Soup
- Chicken Massaman Curry
- Mango Sticky Rice
- Thai Iced Tea
We even fed two resident tortoises called Josh and Sarah (which made me smile as my own son is called Josh!).
It wasn't just a cooking class. It was an authentic insight into Thai culture.
I also experienced a traditional Khantoke Dinner with cultural performances and enjoyed one of the best massages I've ever had.
Elephant Hills – An Experience I'll Never Forget
It isn't somewhere you ride elephants.
Instead, it's an ethical conservation experience where you observe these magnificent animals in their natural environment.
Over two unforgettable days I:
- Fed and interacted with rescued elephants
- Canoed through beautiful rainforest
- Stayed in both the Jungle Camp and the floating Lake Camp
- Took guided jungle walks
- Learnt about conservation
- Enjoyed incredible Thai food surrounded by nature
Waking up on the floating lake camp is something I'll never forget. It felt like another world.
Khao Lak – Luxury Without The Crowds
After adventure came complete relaxation. Khao Lak feels very different to Phuket. It's quieter, more refined and far less commercial.
I stayed at the beautiful Devasom Khao Lak and completely understood why it wins so many awards. This is somewhere I'd recommend for couples wanting genuine luxury without huge crowds.
Long beaches, exceptional food, beautiful rooms and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
Koh Samui – The Perfect Ending
I finished my trip in Koh Samui. My accommodation at Anantara Lawana was exceptional, with a private pool villa that really showcased what luxury travel in Thailand can offer.
Highlights included:
- A private island tour
- Big Buddha Temple
- Fisherman's Village Night Market
- Stunning beaches
- Sunset cocktails at Cocoon
- Fantastic restaurants
- Incredible service
One surprise was watching a Thai boxing match. Whilst I appreciated the athleticism and skill involved, I quickly realised it probably isn't my thing!
Is Thailand Expensive?
One of the biggest surprises was the value for money.
Luxury hotels that would cost significantly more in Europe often come with exceptional service, beautiful surroundings and outstanding food at a fraction of the price.
Whether you're looking for a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, a luxury escape, a wellness retreat, or a multi-centre adventure, Thailand offers remarkable value.
My Recommended Thailand Itinerary
If I were planning a first visit, I'd recommend:
- 2 nights Bangkok
- 3 nights Chiang Mai
- 2 nights Elephant Hills
- 3 nights Khao Lak
- 3 nights Koh Samui
This combination gives you the perfect balance of culture, adventure, wildlife, beaches and luxury.
Thinking About Thailand?
Having experienced these destinations personally, stayed in the hotels, met the local teams and explored the excursions myself, I can help design a Thailand itinerary that's completely tailored to you.
Whether you're dreaming of luxury resorts, ethical wildlife experiences, island hopping, family adventures or a special honeymoon, I'll make sure every part of your holiday is carefully planned from start to finish.
