A few years ago I took my three teenagers (18, 16 and 13 at the time) and my parents, who were in their 70s, on a family adventure to Thailand. It is still one of our most talked‑about holidays, and everyone enjoyed it just as much, whatever their age.

We started with three nights in buzzing Bangkok, flew down to the jungle for two nights at Elephant Hills, then slowed the pace right down with nine nights on the beach in Koh Samui at Bandara Resort & Spa. We travelled in August, so Koh Samui was a deliberate choice for its typically better weather at that time of year. It gave us the confidence to plan a longer beach stay, and it really paid off with plenty of sunshine and calm seas.

Bangkok was the perfect introduction to Thailand: golden temples, tuk tuk rides, street food and night markets that kept the kids happily entertained, while my parents loved the culture, the people‑watching and the comfort of coming back to a good hotel at the end of each day. We kept to one main sight in the morning, then time by the pool or exploring in the evening so we did not overload anyone in the heat.

Elephant Hills was our big adventure and I would say was the highlight of the trip! Staying in tented accommodation in the jungle, surrounded by limestone cliffs and rainforest, felt completely different to anything the kids had experienced before, yet was still comfortable enough for my parents. Meeting the elephants in a responsible, non‑riding environment was a real highlight for all generations.

Bandara in Koh Samui then gave us the space simply to be together.
