Is ATOL Protection Enough?
When booking a holiday, many travellers look for the ATOL logo and assume they're completely protected. While ATOL is an important safeguard and provides valuable financial protection, it's only one piece of the picture. Understanding what ATOL does – and doesn't – cover can help you make informed decisions when booking your next trip.
What is ATOL?
ATOL (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) is a UK financial protection scheme run by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
If you book an ATOL-protected package holiday and the travel company ceases trading, you'll either:
- Receive a full refund if you haven't travelled yet.
- Be able to complete your holiday or be brought home if you're already away.
It's an essential safeguard and one I always recommend whenever it's applicable.
The Travel Counsellors Financial Trust
If you book a Travel Counsellors package holiday, you benefit from an additional layer of financial protection.
Alongside ATOL protection where applicable, every payment you make is held within the independently managed Travel Counsellors Financial Trust. Your money remains protected until your travel arrangements are due to be provided, giving you added peace of mind from the moment you book.
While ATOL is designed to protect customers if an ATOL holder ceases trading, the Travel Counsellors Financial Trust can often provide a quicker and more comprehensive solution. The focus isn't simply on protecting your money – it's about protecting your holiday too.
Support When Plans Change
One of the biggest advantages of booking a Travel Counsellors package holiday is the support you receive if things don't go to plan.
Travel can be unpredictable. Airlines may cancel or change flights, hotels can become unavailable, or events beyond anyone's control can affect your chosen destination.
When this happens, you won't be left to deal with it on your own.
Working alongside my 24/7 Duty Office team, we'll do everything we can to minimise disruption and help keep your holiday on track. Depending on the circumstances, this may include:
- Rearranging flights or booking you with an alternative airline.
- Securing alternative accommodation if your booked hotel is no longer available or suitable.
- Offering an alternative destination if circumstances mean you can no longer travel safely or practically to your original choice.
- Providing a full refund where your holiday cannot go ahead and no suitable alternative is available.
Instead of spending hours on hold to airlines or trying to negotiate with multiple suppliers yourself, you have an experienced team working on your behalf to find the best possible solution.
What ATOL Doesn't Cover
This is where many people are surprised.
ATOL doesn't protect you if:
- You need to cancel because of illness or injury.
- A family emergency means you can't travel.
- Your luggage is lost or delayed.
- You require emergency medical treatment overseas.
- You miss your departure because of an accident or unexpected delay.
- Your personal belongings are stolen.
- You incur additional accommodation or transport costs due to unforeseen events.
These situations are where comprehensive travel insurance becomes just as important as ATOL protection.
What About Flights Booked Separately?
If you book flights directly with an airline, they may not be ATOL protected at all.
Depending on the circumstances, your protection may instead rely on your payment method, the airline's own arrangements or your travel insurance. That's one reason it's worth considering how your whole trip is booked, rather than focusing solely on the price of the flights.
Package Holidays Offer More Than Financial Protection
Package holidays often provide additional legal protections beyond financial cover.
If a significant part of your holiday cannot be delivered as agreed, the package organiser has responsibilities to help find suitable alternatives, assist you while you're away and, where appropriate, provide compensation.
These protections can make a real difference when the unexpected happens.
Don't Forget Travel Insurance
Travel insurance isn't just about medical bills.
A good policy can cover:
- Emergency medical treatment.
- Cancellation and curtailment.
- Lost, stolen or delayed baggage.
- Personal liability.
- Travel delays.
- Missed departures.
- Legal expenses.
- Emergency assistance, 24 hours a day.
The right policy can save you thousands of pounds if something goes wrong.
Why Professional Advice Matters
Every holiday is different.
A city break, cruise, tailor-made itinerary or family adventure may all require different types of protection.

The Bottom Line
ATOL protection is an excellent safety net, but it isn't the whole picture.
For Travel Counsellors package holidays, you benefit from multiple layers of protection:
- The Travel Counsellors Financial Trust.
- ATOL protection where applicable.
- The legal protections that come with package holidays.
- Support from me as your personal Travel Counsellor and our 24/7 Duty Office if your plans change unexpectedly.
- Comprehensive travel insurance for those situations that financial protection doesn't cover.
Together, these provide reassurance before, during and after your holiday, so you can travel with confidence knowing that if the unexpected happens, you won't have to face it alone.
