What Does a Tailor-Made Holiday Actually Mean?
It might sound expensive or extravagant, but tailor-made travel is simply about creating a holiday around you — rather than fitting you into someone else's itinerary.
When you hear the words “tailor-made holiday”, you might immediately think of luxury resorts, private transfers and once-in-a-lifetime trips with an equally impressive price tag.
But tailor-made travel doesn’t have to mean any of those things.
At its simplest, it means starting with you.
How long do you actually want to go away for? Which airport would you prefer to fly from? Do you want an early flight so you can make the most of your first day, or would you rather avoid getting up at 3am? Do you want to be able to walk into town for dinner? Perhaps you want a beautiful beach but absolutely no interest in spending the whole week lying on it.
These are the things that can turn a perfectly good holiday into one that feels completely right for you.
You don't have to fit into 7, 10 or 14 nights
One of the biggest advantages of tailor-made travel is flexibility.
Your holiday can be built around the time you actually have available, rather than around a tour operator's schedule. That might mean making the most of annual leave, working around school holidays or simply deciding that you want to spend longer in one place and less time in another.
And sometimes the best trips aren't about choosing one destination at all.
You could combine a few days exploring a city with time on the coast, pair a safari with a beach stay, add a stopover to a long-haul journey, or spend part of your holiday travelling before finishing somewhere you can completely switch off.
It's about the little things too
Tailor-made doesn't necessarily mean creating an elaborate multi-centre itinerary.
Sometimes it's simply finding a holiday that meets the details that matter to you.
A hotel within walking distance of local restaurants. A quieter resort rather than somewhere dominated by nightlife. Connecting rooms for a family. A proper two-bedroom apartment rather than a sofa bed in the lounge. Flights that work around school or work commitments. Somewhere with good snorkelling straight from the beach, or a destination where you won't need to hire a car.
Individually, these things might seem small. Put them together and they can completely change your experience.
Start with the experience, not the destination
Sometimes people come to me knowing exactly where they want to go. Others know exactly what they want from their holiday but have no idea where they'll find it.
And I actually love those enquiries.
You might tell me you want sunshine, a small old town with restaurants you can walk to in the evening, somewhere your teenagers won't be bored and a beach nearby — but you don't particularly mind which country it's in.
That opens up far more possibilities than simply typing a destination into a search box.
The same applies if your priority is wildlife, food, hiking, diving, music, culture, wellness or simply finding somewhere wonderfully peaceful.
The destination becomes the answer rather than the starting point.
Tailor-made doesn't automatically mean more expensive
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions.
Of course, a tailor-made holiday can be incredibly luxurious if that's what you're looking for. But it doesn't have to be.
Your budget is simply another part of the brief.
Sometimes spending a little less on one element means you can spend more on something that's important to you. Perhaps you'd rather stay in a simple, characterful hotel in a fantastic location and use the difference for an unforgettable experience.
It's about deciding where your money will make the biggest difference to your holiday.
And sometimes a package holiday is perfect
There are times when an existing package does exactly what you need it to do.
If the right hotel, flights, dates and price are already there, there's no benefit in making things more complicated simply for the sake of calling it tailor-made.
The point isn't that every holiday needs to be individually constructed.
The point is that your holiday should fit you — not the other way around.
So, what would your tailor-made holiday look like?
You don't need to arrive with a destination, hotel and itinerary already chosen.
In fact, sometimes the most interesting holidays begin with something much simpler:
“I've got ten days. This is my budget. And this is what I'd really love to do…”
From there, we can work out where in the world fits.
