Why shoulder season can be the sweet spot for a luxury escape

Mikki Marshall on 17 Jul 2026

When you picture your dream holiday, it probably does not include battling through crowds, queueing for sun loungers or struggling to get a dinner reservation before 9.30 pm. Yet that is exactly what peak season can feel like in many popular destinations. If you are looking for comfort, space and a more relaxed pace, there is a quieter, cleverer option that often works beautifully: travelling in the shoulder season.

As a personal Travel Counsellor, this is one of my favourite ways to help clients enjoy a more luxurious experience, often with better value and far less stress.

What is shoulder season?

Shoulder season is the period just before or just after a destination’s traditional “peak” time. It sits between high season and low season:

  • Typically, the weather is still pleasant
  • Visitor numbers are lower
  • Prices can be more attractive than at the very height of the season

Think of:

  • Mediterranean resorts in late May or September
  • Cities outside major holiday weekends
  • Long-haul destinations in the weeks either side of local school holidays or monsoon periods

The exact dates depend on the destination, which is where personalised advice really matters.

Why shoulder season often feels more luxurious

Luxury is not only about thread count and star ratings. It is also about how a place feels when you are there.

Travelling in shoulder season can offer:

1. More space and a calmer atmosphere
Even the most beautiful hotel can feel less special when every sun lounger is taken and the breakfast buffet feels like a race. In shoulder season you often find:

  • Quieter pools and beaches
  • A more relaxed feel in restaurants and bars
  • Easier access to facilities like spas, gyms and kids’ clubs

You still enjoy all the same amenities, simply with a little more breathing room.

2. More attentive service
When staff are less stretched, they have more time to chat, recommend their favourite local spots and add thoughtful touches. That can transform a nice stay into a memorable one.

3. Better access to experiences
Popular activities and restaurants can book up far in advance during peak season. In shoulder season, it is often easier to secure:

  • Prime-time tables at sought-after restaurants
  • Private guides at sensible times of day
  • Spa appointments and activities that fit around your schedule

All those details add up to a smoother, more “looked after” experience.

The value advantage: your budget goes further

Shoulder season does not always mean dramatically lower prices, but it often means significantly better value for what you spend.

Depending on the destination, you might find that for a similar budget to peak season you can enjoy:

  • A higher room category, such as a suite or sea view
  • A more exclusive or boutique property instead of a standard option
  • Longer stays, upgraded transfers or added experiences

Rather than cutting corners to squeeze into peak dates, you may be able to elevate the whole trip simply by travelling a few weeks earlier or later.

Weather: the nuance that really matters

Weather is one of the main reasons people hesitate about travelling outside peak season, and understandably so. Nobody wants to gamble an important holiday on guesswork.

This is where tailored advice really comes into its own. Shoulder season is not one-size-fits-all:

  • In some places, “shoulder” means pleasantly warm instead of very hot, which can be ideal for sightseeing, families with younger children, or anyone who struggles in extreme heat.
  • In others, it might mean a higher chance of showers but still plenty of sunshine, which some clients are perfectly happy with for the trade-off in value and crowds.
  • There are destinations where it simply does not make sense to travel outside quite specific windows, in which case I will always say so.

My role is to talk honestly about what to expect for your dates and priorities, so you can make an informed decision rather than relying on averages or generic advice.

Shoulder season and family or school holiday constraints

If you are tied to school holidays, you might feel like shoulder season is not an option at all. While we cannot move term dates, we can still be creative.

For example:

  • Choosing destinations where the local peak is slightly different to the UK summer, so you feel less of the squeeze.
  • Looking at late August into early September, depending on your school’s calendar and your comfort level.
  • Using May or October half term for climates where those weeks sit nicely in the shoulder rather than the absolute peak.

It is about finding that sweet spot between what works for your family and where your budget and comfort stretch the furthest.

How a Travel Counsellor helps you make the most of shoulder season

You do not have to work all of this out on your own. When we look at shoulder season options together, I will:

  • Suggest destinations and dates where the balance of weather, value and atmosphere genuinely works.
  • Explain the pros and cons honestly, including anything that might be closed or reduced in quieter periods.
  • Match hotels and room types to the sort of experience you want, whether that is a chic adults-only retreat, a family-friendly resort or a private villa.
  • Build a smooth itinerary around your chosen dates, including flights, transfers and any key experiences you would like to pre-book.

The aim is simple: for your time away to feel unrushed, comfortable and well considered, rather than cramped into the busiest weeks of the year.

Is shoulder season right for you?

Shoulder season can be a fantastic option if you:

  • Prefer a calmer atmosphere to a lively, “buzzing” resort feel
  • Want more comfort or longer stays without endlessly stretching the budget
  • Are happy to trade the very hottest or busiest weeks for something more relaxed
  • Like the idea of feeling as if a destination breathes a little more around you

If you are curious about how this might work for your next trip, I would love to chat through some ideas with you.

Tell me what you are dreaming of, when you are roughly able to travel and who will be coming with you, and I will help you find that shoulder-season sweet spot where luxury, value and ease all come together.
