Top Things To Do in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Known for its terracotta rooftops, crystal-clear waters and rich history, Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful destinations in Croatia and a must-visit city on the Adriatic coast. Often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, Dubrovnik perfectly combines history, culture, luxury and adventure.

Whether you’re planning a Croatia touring holiday, a luxury European city break, or an island-hopping adventure along the Dalmatian Coast, Dubrovnik offers unforgettable experiences for every type of traveller.

Here are some of my personal recommendations after our fabulous summer holiday last year:

1. Walk the Famous Dubrovnik City Walls

One of the top attractions in Dubrovnik is walking the ancient city walls that surround the UNESCO-listed Old Town. Dating back to the 13th century, the walls offer breathtaking panoramic views across the terracotta rooftops, the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding Croatian coastline.

The walk takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and is best enjoyed early in the morning or later in the afternoon during the summer months as it a bit of a sun trap!

Top tip: Bring plenty of water and don’t forget your camera — the views are spectacular.Walking the Old Town Walls

2. Explore Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik Old Town is the heart of the city and one of the most beautiful historic centres in Europe. Wander through the limestone streets, hidden alleyways and charming squares while discovering centuries of history and culture.

The Old Town is also filled with fantastic restaurants and wine bars, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon people watching.Old Town

3. Take the Cable Car to Mount Srđ

For some of the best views in Dubrovnik, take the cable car to the top of Mount Srđ. From here, you’ll enjoy incredible views over Dubrovnik Old Town, Lokrum Island and the sparkling Adriatic coastline.

Visiting at sunset is particularly magical and is one of the best photography spots in Croatia.

Top tip: Book a front row table at the Panorama Restaurant. You can reach is via the cable car or get an uber up the mountain!View from the Panorama Restaurant

4. Visit Lokrum Island

Located just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik harbour, Lokrum Island is the perfect escape from the busy city streets.

The island is known for its botanical gardens, scenic walking trails, rocky swimming spots and peaceful atmosphere. You’ll even spot peacocks wandering freely around the island.

Lokrum is ideal for a relaxing half-day trip during your Dubrovnik holiday.

5. Discover Dubrovnik’s Beautiful Swim Spots

Unlike many European city destinations, Dubrovnik offers plenty of beautiful swim spots just moments from the historic Old Town making is super easy to combine sight seeing with a swim in the crystal clear water!

Popular places to swim include:

  • Banje Beach — Dubrovnik’s most famous beach with stunning Old Town views
  • Buža Bars — cliffside bars with ladders leading directly into the sea
  • Sveti Jakov Beach — a quieter beach with breathtaking coastal scenery
  • Copacabana Beach — ideal for families and watersportsSecret swim spot

6. Go Sea Kayaking Around Dubrovnik’s City Walls

For travellers looking for adventure in Dubrovnik, sea kayaking is one of the most unforgettable experiences in the city.

Paddling along the Adriatic coastline gives you a completely different perspective of Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls and the impressive Lovrijenac Fortress. Many kayaking tours also include stops at hidden caves and secluded swim spots along the coastline.

Sunset kayaking tours are particularly popular and combine adventure, spectacular scenery and unforgettable views of Dubrovnik Old Town.Sea Kayaking with a view!

7. Enjoy a Sunset Cruise Along the Adriatic Coast

A sunset cruise is one of the most unforgettable experiences in Dubrovnik. Seeing the ancient city walls from the water while the sun sets over the Adriatic Sea is simply breathtaking.

Many cruises include local wine, cocktails and swimming stops in secluded bays, making them perfect for couples, honeymooners and luxury travellers.

If you don’t fancy heading out on the water, there are plenty of bars and restaurants offering beautiful views.

Why Visit Dubrovnik?

Whether you’re looking for history, culture, adventure, luxury or relaxation, Dubrovnik truly offers something for everyone. From ancient city walls and island escapes to luxury cruises and incredible food, it’s easy to see why Dubrovnik has become one of Europe’s most sought-after travel destinations.
