Southern Wonders with AAT Kings: My New Zealand Adventure
In March I was lucky enough to join the AAT Kings Southern Wonders tour, journeying from Christchurch through the Southern Alps and down to the deep south. Over nine unforgettable days we covered more than 2,500 km of jaw‑dropping scenery, brilliant experiences and plenty of laughs with a wonderful group of fellow travellers. Whether you are one of my lovely clients dreaming of New Zealand or a fellow Travel Counsellor looking for first‑hand insight, I hope this gives you a real feel for what this itinerary is like on the ground.
Here is a day‑by‑day look at this incredible New Zealand adventure.
Christchurch to the Wild West Coast
Today’s adventure started in beautiful Christchurch, boarding the iconic TranzAlpine train and winding our way through the Southern Alps. The views were just incredible: rolling farmlands giving way to snow‑dusted peaks, deep gorges and turquoise rivers right outside the window.
We hopped off at Arthur’s Pass, then continued by road to the wild West Coast town of Hokitika, known for its rugged coastline and famous pounamu (greenstone). From there we drove on to Franz Josef, ready for a bucket‑list experience: a helicopter flight over the glacier.
Sadly, the weather had other ideas, and it was cancelled for safety reasons. Nature: 1. Us: 0.
If you know me, you will know I already ticked off a glacier helicopter in Greenland last year, so clearly this is becoming a bit of a habit. I think I just need to work my way through all the glaciers now!
We made the most of it, walked up to the viewing platform and were still rewarded with a beautiful view of Franz Josef Glacier from a distance. Even without the flight, this journey was already feeling pretty special.
Queenstown, Lord of the Rings & Lake Whakatipu Magic
From Franz Josef, we continued our journey south and soon arrived in Queenstown for two incredible nights.
If you are a fan of The Lord of the Rings like me, visiting Queenstown is extra special. I joined a tour of the famous filming locations, and it was amazing to see the landscapes up close while hearing all the behind‑the‑scenes stories from the films. It really brings the movies to life when you can stand in the exact places where scenes were filmed.
In the afternoon, we headed to a fantastic winery right in the centre of town, where you can sample over 100 of New Zealand’s best wines, whiskies and gins, a perfect way to experience the country’s incredible local produce.
Then in the evening, thanks to Rochelle at @real.newzealand, we experienced something truly memorable. We boarded the historic TSS Earnslaw and cruised across the stunning Lake Whakatipu to Walter Peak High Country Farm for a gourmet BBQ dinner.
Walter Peak is such a special setting: a beautifully restored colonial homestead surrounded by sweeping gardens and breathtaking lake views back towards Queenstown. The experience includes a scenic cruise across the lake, a delicious buffet dinner featuring local and homegrown produce, and after dessert, we enjoyed a brilliant farm dog show.
A cruise, dinner and show all in one unforgettable evening: definitely one of the highlights of my time in Queenstown.
Queenstown to Te Anau & Magical Milford Sound
This morning we set off from Queenstown and travelled through some truly spectacular scenery to Te Anau, where we stopped for lunch and our overnight stay.
After lunch, we headed out to the beautiful Mirror Lakes, where the still water perfectly reflects the surrounding mountains. It is such a peaceful and picturesque spot.
Our journey then continued through the mountains towards Milford Sound, including travelling through the remarkable Homer Tunnel. It is incredible to think this tunnel was carved through solid rock by hand using pickaxes, an amazing achievement considering the harsh conditions the workers faced.
From there we boarded our cruise in Milford Sound and sailed through the fjord surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls and dramatic landscapes. It is easy to see why this is one of New Zealand’s most famous natural wonders.
Once we returned to Te Anau, the day was not over. This evening we took a boat trip across Lake Te Anau to visit the magical glowworm caves. Drifting quietly through the caves under a ceiling of tiny glowing lights was the perfect way to end a fantastic day.
New Zealand really does deliver unforgettable moments at every turn. ✨
Te Anau to Dunedin, Cheese Rolls & Coastal Wildlife
We left Te Anau this morning and travelled through some absolutely beautiful scenery on our way to Dunedin. Our first stop was Gore for coffee and cake (although some of the group could not resist trying the famous Southland cheese rolls! 🧀☕).
Along the journey, we were lucky enough to spot a very rare train passing through, something you definitely do not see every day.
Once in Dunedin, we stopped to admire the city’s stunning historic railway station. Even though it is not used in the same way today, it is still one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.
This evening we headed out on a wildlife cruise and were treated to some incredible sightings, including Royal Albatross, Little Blue Penguins and seals. The dramatic coastline, fresh sea air and up‑close wildlife made it the perfect way to end a brilliant day.
Dunedin to Omarama, Coastal Charm & Starry Skies
We started the day in Dunedin with a visit to Baldwin Street, officially the steepest street in the world. It might be short, but your legs definitely know about it!
From Dunedin, we continued our journey towards Omarama with a lovely stop in the beautiful town of Oamaru along the way. The town has so much character, and seeing the historic steam train made it feel like stepping back in time.
We stopped for an amazing lunch by the sea with delicious food, the sound of the waves and gorgeous coastal views all around us.
Along the way, we also stopped for photos at the impressive Benmore Dam. The views there are absolutely stunning and it is incredible to see the scale of it in person.
Arriving in Omarama later in the day, we were treated to one of the most magical sights of all: the night sky. With so little light around, the stars were absolutely incredible, bright, endless and completely breathtaking. A perfect way to end a wonderful day of exploring. ✨
Omarama to Christchurch, Lake Tekapo & Farewell to Our AAT Kings Whānau
Last day of our tour!
We set off from Omarama this morning, beginning our journey back to Christchurch for a final night. It is hard to believe how quickly the time has gone.
Our first stop was the stunning Lake Tekapo, where we visited the Dark Sky Project and learned more about the incredible night skies this region is famous for. The lake looked spectacular, its bright turquoise waters framed by snow‑capped peaks.
From there, we travelled on to Geraldine for lunch before continuing our journey north. One final loo stop (a very important tradition on any road trip!) gave us the perfect opportunity for a last group photo as we said goodbye to our wonderful AAT Kings whānau (the Māori word for family).
