Canadian Rockies
Banff
A country with so many options for holidays... for us we have enjoyed the Rockies ! Next on the list is a cross country road trip in an RV !!
Canada: Our Family’s Winter
Adventure Playground
For the past four years, our family winter escape has had one clear favourite: Canada. From the soaring peaks of the Rockies to the world‑class slopes of Whistler, it has become the place where we swap school runs for ski runs, screens for snowy scenes, and everyday life for crisp mountain air and endless adventure.
The Journey: Calgary to the Rockies
Each year we fly into Calgary, pick up a hire car at the airport and head west towards the Rockies. It is an unforgettable drive: the city skyline gradually fades in the rear‑view mirror as the jagged peaks of the mountains rise ahead of you.
The roads are well maintained, the journey is straightforward, and that first sight of the snow‑capped Rockies never loses its magic. It is the moment we all feel the holiday has truly begun.
Why We Love the Canadian Rockies
We are a family who loves the mountains, and they do not get much better than in Canada. Over our trips we have come to appreciate what makes the Rockies so special for skiers and snowboarders of all ages:
- Perfect snow conditions: Consistently powdery snow that makes every turn feel effortless.
- Bluebird skies: Those clear, bright winter days when the sun lights up the peaks and the views go on forever.
- Varied terrain: From wide, confidence‑building beginner slopes to challenging runs and bowls for more advanced skiers and boarders.
- Warm hospitality: Friendly, laid‑back resorts where you are welcomed like a local, not just a visitor.
- Great food and cosy après: Think hearty mountain dishes, craft beers, hot chocolates and fireside lounges you will struggle to leave.
Whistler & Vancouver:
We have also travelled over to Whistler and Vancouver which are again stunningly beautiful.
Whistler is a true bucket‑list ski destination: a bustling alpine village with an energetic atmosphere, extensive lift network and terrain that can keep every level of skier or boarder happy for days on end. Off the slopes, there is just as much to enjoy: zip‑lining, spas, ice skating, and a fantastic choice of restaurants and bars.
Combining Whistler with time in Vancouver gives you the best of both worlds. One day you are skiing high above the tree line, and the next you are wandering along the waterfront, exploring neighbourhoods, or enjoying the city’s renowned food scene. It is a brilliant way to round off a mountain‑focused trip and gives everyone in the family something to get excited about.
Surprisingly Close To Home
Despite feeling wonderfully
far from everyday life, Canada is closer than many people realise. With direct
flights from the UK of around 8 hours (Calgary), it is perfectly manageable for families.

Why Choose Canada For Your Next Ski or Snowboard Holiday?
From our own family experience, Canada offers:
- Reliable snow and superb grooming
- Friendly, relaxed resorts ideal for families and mixed‑ability groups
- Stunning scenery and memorable self‑drive journeys
- Plenty to do off the slopes, from wildlife spotting to city stays
- A genuine sense of space and escape that is hard to find elsewhere
If you are dreaming of powdery snow, blue skies, impeccable hospitality and mountain landscapes that take your breath away, Canada is very hard to beat.
When Is The Best Time To Go Skiing In Canada?
One of the reasons we keep returning to Canada is the long, reliable winter season. If you are wondering when to go, here is how the months typically feel:
- Early
season: late November to mid‑December
A magical time to be in the mountains if you want quieter slopes and that “first snow” excitement. Ideal for keen skiers and snowboarders who are happy with a more limited terrain opening at the very start. - Festive
season: Christmas & New Year
Think fairy‑lit villages, roaring fires and a real winter wonderland feel. It is a fantastic time for families, but it is also one of the busiest and most expensive periods, so it is worth booking early. - Peak
snow: January & February
If you are all about powder, this is usually when Canada really shines. Temperatures can be very cold, but the reward is those classic dry, fluffy snow conditions that skiers and boarders dream of. Wrap up well and you will be in heaven. - Bluebird
favourites: March & early April
Our personal sweet spot for family trips. You still get great snow coverage, but with more daylight, a slightly softer feel underfoot and a good number of those bluebird days that Canada does so well. Great for families with children, as it feels less harsh than mid‑winter. - Easter
& late season: April
Many resorts in the Rockies and around Whistler stay open into April, sometimes even beyond, depending on snow. It can be a brilliant time if you enjoy a more relaxed, “spring skiing” vibe, with long lunches on sunny terraces and a more laid‑back feel.
Whenever you go, Canada rewards you with its trademark combination of powdery snow, warm hospitality and big‑sky mountain scenery. I can help you choose the resort and dates that best match your family’s ski level, school holidays and budget.
